New Land Rover Discovery launched

Land Rover has unveiled its fifth-generation Discovery by breaking a Guinness World Record for the largest LEGO structure ever built.

Long-term Land Rover Discovery owners Bear Grylls, Sir Ben Ainslie and Zara Phillips took part in the dynamic live reveal of Land Rover’s seven-seater SUV Around a 13-metre high LEGO version of London’s Tower Bridge.

The structure was made from 5,805,846 individual LEGO bricks, breaking the previous Guinness World Record by 470,646 pieces. Laid end to end, the bricks would stretch for almost 200 miles, or from Tower Bridge in London to Paris.

Land Rover BAR team principal Sir Ben Ainslie drives the new Land Rover Discovery at global unveiling at Packington Hall, Solihull, UK accompanied by team manager Jono Macbeth

“I have developed a powerful bond with Land Rover vehicles over the years and to me they embody that spirit of adventure coupled with a rugged reliability that also serves the needs of a young family,” said adventurer Bear Grylls.

“Land Rover Discovery is invaluable on expeditions, whether filming in deserts, jungles or mountains, yet it’s still the perfect vehicle for the family’s everyday use. It’s a proud moment to be here with Land Rover revealing the New Discovery to the world.”

Dark Knight’s Batpod sells for £312,000

A Batpod from The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises movies has been sold at auction for £312,000.

Batman’s hi-tech motorbike was custom designed for the blockbusters and was one of the highest selling lots in Prop Store’s London auction.

In The Dark Knight, Batman (Christian Bale) used the Batpod to escape during his battle with the Joker (Heath Ledger) and in an unsuccessful attempt to save Rachel Dawes (Maggie Gyllenhaal).

In The Dark Knight Rises, Batman and Selina Kyle (Anne Hathaway) hopped on the vehicle during their battles with Bane (Tom Hardy) and the new League of Shadows.

Conceived by director Christopher Nolan and production designer Nathan Crowley, the Batpod was intended to provide an alternative to Batmans trusty Tumbler vehicle.

Six of the vehicles were built and they were largely driven by stunt rider Jean-Pierre Goy during filming. They also featured at numerous events promoting the films.

The unique Batpod is designed for a rider in a prone position, who steers the vehicle with their arms and shoulders, and it features advanced design elements such as an exhaust system integrated within the framework.

“I hesitate to call it a motorcycle because its design was much more exotic and powerful looking than a tradition motorcycle,” explained Nolan in the book, ‘The Art and Making of The Dark Knight Trilogy’.

The Batpod features a custom-made chassis with 31 Hoosier racing tyres and a Honda 750cc engine.

Fibreglass body panels finished in metallic grey paint cover the bike’s engine and handlebars and a pair of cannon barrels made of plastic, resin and fibreglass are secured at the front of the vehicle. There’s also a laser targeting unit fitted above the right hand grip.

A radiator and hydraulics are fitted behind the saddle, and the braking system is operated by controls on the left handle and the right pedal.

Black foam padding is installed on the body, saddle and knee rests for comfort whilst riding. Well-used on both productions, the Batpod “displays some wear to the body panels and some light corrosion on the chassis, with damage to the left gun mount as a result of use on set”.

However, the Batpod was “sold in non-functional rolling only condition”, having been drained of all fluids, while the battery, fuel tank and throttle controls had all been removed. It was the first Batpod ever to go on sale though.

Pure electric McLaren launched

McLaren Automotive has unveiled its first 100% electric vehicle – the diminutive McLaren P1.

Now available, but only to a limited group of potential customers (those under the age of six), the open-top car features a central driving position – just like the iconic McLaren F1 – and McLaren’s signature dihedral doors.

The car surges into life via a one-button stop/start function which automatically activates the lights. There’s also an MP3 player and audio system as standard, plus it features a reverse gear in addition to its three speed, forward transmission. Handy if you’ve arrived at the wrong playground.

Capable of a top speed of 3pm, the ride-on Mclaren P1 is available in just one colour (Volcano Yellow) from selected McLaren retailers globally for £375.

Volvo S90 and V90: twin test

Volvo has rediscovered its mojo in recent years – the evergreen V40 and V60 are still good cars, the acclaimed XC90 is a class-leader, while the XC60 remains a big-selling SUV.

Now it’s time to meet the all-new S90 saloon and V90 estate – serious new competitors in the big family/executive car market.

Volvo S90 / V90

These siblings have to be good too, because they’re up against the might of the Mercedes E-Class, BMW 5-Series, Audi A6 and Jaguar XF.

Following on from the acclaimed XC90 SUV, the S90 and V90 complete the range-topping 90 series – a welcome return for the Swedish car giant in this highly competitive sector.

Volvo V90

Volvo may now be Chinese owned, but thanks to fresh investment it’s doing better than ever. Helped by the new XC90, Volvo sold more than 500,000 cars in 2015 – the first time it has reached that milestone in the company’s 89-year history.

Over the next three years, Volvo will revamp its entire car range, so the 90 series is just the start.

First impressions are good. Continuing some of the distinctive design language of the XC90, the front end of the V90 and S90 is characterised by the Thor’s Hammer LED headlights and a concave grille (a homage to the classic Volvo P1800 of the late 1960s).

Volvo S90

The S90 flagship saloon is low and sleek, though perhaps not quite so stylish at the rear, while the V90 has to be one of the most handsome estates out there.

Both cars have some serious heritage to live up to. The V90 benefits from six decades of estate car knowledge, starting with the Volvo Duett which was launched in 1953, while the S90 is the latest in a long line of successful big saloons including the Amazon, 200 series and 800 series.

Volvo S90 INTERIOR

Inside, the new S90 and V90 cars are luxurious is a superb Scandi way – unmistakeably light with plush materials. The seats are comfortable and the design of the cockpit follows on from the XC90 with a slick layout and a large 9-inch tablet touchscreen in the centre console.

You can also specify a classy 12.3-inch digital display in place of the traditional instrument binnacle, while the head-up display is also well worth having.

Volvo S90 INTERIOR

Rear passengers are treated to limo-like leg space and ample headroom, despite the cars’ low rooflines.

Needless to say, luggage space is excellent in the V90 with 560 litres available, while the S90 can stow away a decent 500 litres.

Under the bonnet there’s a choice of two 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engines, with a petrol-electric plug-in hybrid to follow.

Volvo V90 BOOT

The entry-level D4 diesel produces 187bhp, while the more powerful D5 manages a healthy 232bhp. A Polestar Performance Optimisation package is also available, increasing the power of the D5 to 237bhp, as well as improving throttle response, gearshift speed, engine performance and driving dynamics.

The less powerful engine has CO2 emissions of 116g/km of CO2 and claimed fuel economy of 64.2mpg which means it qualifies for £30 road tax. It has a top speed of 140mph and a 0-62mph time of 8.2 seconds. The 237bhp version has CO2 emissions of 127g/km and it can reach 62mph in a slightly brisker 7.3 seconds, but economy drops slightly to 59mpg, and can reach 145mph.

Volvo V90

There are a refreshingly simple two trim levels (Momentum and Inscription) and all versions are available with an eight-speed automatic gearbox. The gear changes are smooth, if not always the fastest. All-wheel drive is also available.

Progress is definitely brisker in cars with the more powerful diesel, but the entry-level is more than enough for most.

Like most diesels, engine noise is noticeable during quick getaways, but it soon settles down and the general level of cabin refinement is impressive.

Volvo S90 BOOT

As you can already tell, there’s not much to choose between the S90 and V90 except looks and practicality. The interiors are pretty much the same and they are similar to drive, though Volvo expects the V90 to account for the lion’s share of sales.

The ride is firm, but body roll on cornering is pretty well controlled. If you want a more floaty ride, go for the air suspension option.

Needless to say, the S90 and V90 are packed full of tech and stacks of safety equipment is available including the latest version of Pilot Assist, which allows semi-autonomous driving on motorways at up to 80mph.

In theory it will regulate speed, acceleration, braking and steering to keep you within a lane, but I wasn’t 100% convinced. First you have to keep your hands on the steering wheel (loosely) or you’re prompted to do so regularly. Secondly, our test car had a tendency to drive to the left of a chosen lane. Ultimately, being driven autonomously is an uncanny experience and I’m sure it’s fine with familiarity.

Volvo V90 EXIT

The S90 saloon starts at £32,555 and the V90 is a little more at £34,555. Frankly the entry-level Momentum model has pretty much everything you could want as standard, including dual-zone climate control, sat nav, heated leather seats, keyless start, adaptive cruise control etc. Upgrade to Inscription and you get keyless entry and electric seats, among other extras. Sexier wheels and chrome trim strips are the most obvious differences looks wise.

Verdict: The classy new V90 estate and S90 saloon models are serious contenders – safe, stylish and practical, they are a refreshingly distinctive alternative to the German autobahn expresses which dominate the executive segment.

50 years of Toyota’s “people’s car”

Toyota is celebrating 50 years of the Corolla – the world’s most popular car.

Since the original model was introduced in Japan in 1966, more than 44 million have been sold worldwide.

And although the Corolla has not been part of the UK model range since 2008, it remains an important part of Toyota’s global line-up, manufactured in 16 plants worldwide.

It has also played a major part in the Japanese giant’s history because one in every five new vehicles sold in Toyota’s 79-year history has been a Corolla.

The Corolla was designed to be a “people’s car,” introduced in saloon and estate body styles and displaying higher build quality and – for its time – lavish equipment features.

The specification included a floor-mounted gear lever, individual front bucket seats with generous padding and a spacious rear bench that was likened to a family sofa. Although classed as a compact car, its high roof height made the interior feel exceptionally roomy.

The Corolla was Toyota’s second model to be imported into the UK, following the Corona into showrooms within its launch year, 1966. Through successive generations and a wide range of body styles, it continued to be available up to 2008 and more than 560,000 cars were sold.

Between 1988 and 2006 Toyota built the five-door hatchback models at its Burnaston factory in Derbyshire for the UK and Europe, then production ended to make way for Auris, Toyota’s new (and current) compact hatchback for the European market.

Although renowned as a family car, the Corolla was also a success in UK motorsport. The Corolla GT rear-wheel drive coupe was driven by Chris Hodgetts to victory in the 1986 British Touring Car Championship – a feat he repeated the following year.

Caterham Seven 620R immortalised by LEGO

British sports car marque Caterham and iconic toy maker LEGO have teamed up to create a plastic brick version of the barnstorming 620R.

Consisting of more than 770 pieces, including a replica 620R engine, it’s Caterham’s very first immortalisation in LEGO form.

Fan Carl Greatrix originally submitted his plan for a new set to the LEGO Ideas platform. The Caterham Seven gained the requisite 10,000 votes and the LEGO Ideas Review team selected the 620R to go into production.

The LEGO Caterham, which is priced £69 and hits the shelves in october, stands 10cm tall and 28cm long. Other unique features which may cause fans to blow a gasket include:

  • Removable nose cone
  • Removable engine cover
  • Steering wheel
  • Opening boot
  • Functioning axle stands which allow the wheels to be removed

“Caterham has always prided itself on producing bespoke, hand-built cars for its customers,” said Caterham’s David Ridley.

“Our army of fans who build their own Caterham Sevens are equally discerning when it comes to the detail and craftsmanship which is central to Caterham, and we worked closely with the LEGO team to ensure the LEGO model replicated that.”

“The LEGO 620R has various unique features – the intricately-designed engine was certainly a surprise when we lifted the bonnet for the first time. It’s really satisfying to know that fans can recreate and build their own 620R with LEGO bricks.”
