One in five drivers admit to lying when it comes to selling their car in order to shift the vehicle.
Some of the lies that have been told by those wanting a quick sale include porkies about the brakes, tyres, mileage and even the car history, with 45% of those admitting they just wanted to get the sell.
The new research released by online vehicle purchasing company, SellCar, indicates that older drivers are more trustworthy than those who have just passed their test, with 42% of 18-24 year olds admitting to lying about the quality of a car when selling compared to just 10% of those over 55 years.
Surprisingly, the survey also revealed that more than a quarter (28%) of motorists have bought a secondhand car without even test driving it.
Only one in five (18%) trust a car salesman when buying or selling a car, with 45% preferring to go through a friend, where possible.
In addition, 35% would meet a prospective buyer at somewhere other than their house, with 17% admitting that if something went wrong with the car they didn’t want them to know where they lived.
The large majority of people doubt their knowledge of cars with only a fifth confident enough to make the selling or purchasing decision by themselves, while the remaining 80% rely on the second opinion of their parents, partner or friend.
One of the reasons for people’s lack of confidence when selling a car is that they don’t fully understand the terminology used by car dealers (64%), with 14% unwilling to ask for clarification due to embarrassment and the fear of looking stupid.
