Why Jose Mourinho’s a Jag man…

Watch Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho reveal what it takes to be “special” as he takes to the streets in a Jaguar XJ.

“Jaguar for me represents passion and performance,” says Mourinho. “It’s one thing to play for a club, or to coach a club, another is to play or to coach with passion, and feel the passion, and I think Jaguar’s cars are also like this. You feel the passion that they invest into their cars”.

Mourinho is to stranger to Big Cats. He wase of the first people to drive the F-Pace, the fastest-selling Jaguar ever, ahead of its launch last year.

He also mastered the art of high speed drifting and full throttle ice driving on a 60km frozen lake at Jaguar Land Rover’s extreme testing facility in Arjeplog, Sweden.

Drivers confused by conflicting speed limit signs

Motorists have been left baffled after council workers painted two conflicting speed restrictions on the same road.

A controversial city-wide 20mph limit is set to be introduced across Edinburgh this year and some streets are already being painted with the new restriction.

But on one road this has led to confusion with one side of the road saying the limit is 20mph and the other saying it is 30mph.

Motorists have expressed their confusion on social media with one calling the situation “hilarious”.

But council bosses have sought to reassure bemused drivers with the new limit set to come into force across much of the city on February 28.

Similar signs have been spotted at the Leith Walk end of London Road.

Accompanying the painted warnings will be traditional speed limit signs at the side of the road.

The painted notifications of speed limits are part of a pioneering scheme to introduce 20mph limits across 80 per cent of Edinburgh’s roads.

The initiative was rolled out in the city centre and rural west of Edinburgh last August to a groundswell of initial opposition – with a 2700 signature petition to get the decision reversed.

AA spokesman Ian Crowder welcomed 20mph zones but only where “appropriate” – such as roads with schools.

He said: “Most collisions occur in these types of streets and there’s a significant difference between hitting someone at 20mph, when there’s a good chance they’ll survive, and 30mph where there’s a good chance they’ll be killed.”

But blanket 20mph zones across cities could be “counter-productive”, warns the motoring association.

Mr Crowder added: “I would caution against putting 20mph limits across every street without good reason.

“Drivers can become irritated by it. The majority of people respect 30mph limits but 20mph is quite slow and people can start to ignore them.”

But subsequent city-wide consultations reported positive feedback – amid some remaining concerns around increased congestion, road safety and longer journey times.

The scheme is the first of its kind in Scotland and is expected to be fully rolled-out by next January with £100 fines and three penalty points for drivers caught speeding.

Key arterial routes are among the few that will retain 30 and 40mph limits.

Bosses at Lothian Buses have previously warned the new limits could lead to higher fares and poorer services.

A council spokesman explained the signs with the 30mph limit were for vehicles exiting onto the nearby Portobello Road while the 20mph is for those driving onto the residential street of Craigentinny Crescent.

He said: “The 30mph road marking signifies the speed limit on Portobello Road on to which drivers exit.

“This will be reinforced by an adjacent road sign signalling the end of the 20mph zone, which will be erected before the 20mph limit comes into force in this area on February 28.

“The 20mph road marking refers to the 20mph speed limit on Craigentinny Crescent.”

Range Rover Sport SVR: a gripping yarn

Land Rover has produced a film demonstrating the Range Rover Sport SVR’s awesome acceleration – whatever the terrain.

In a unique test, the SVR completes the 0-62mph sprint on standard fit Michelin 275/45 R21 All Season Tyres on everything from Tarmac and grass to snow and sand, using Land Rover’s innovative Terrain Response 2 technology.

Come rain or shine, grass or gravel, snow or sand, the SVR delivers devastating pace…

The times recorded are a testament to the Range Rover Sport’s inherent capability. On a notoriously slippery wet grass surface, the 0-62mph time increased by only 0.8 seconds, while even on Sand the benchmark sprint took only 5.5 seconds.

Terrain Mode 0-62mph time
Asphalt Dynamic 4.7 seconds
Grass Grass, Gravel and Snow 5.5 seconds
Gravel Grass, Gravel and Snow 5.3 seconds
Snow Grass, Gravel and Snow 11.3 seconds
Mud Mud and Ruts 6.5 seconds
Sand Sand 5.5 seconds

Real cost of motoring revealed

Did you know the average British motorist spends £1,116 on fuel and wastes three days stuck in traffic ever year?

New research for The Car People reveals that despite spending a lot of time in their cars, 87% of Brits believe they have more freedom because of their car.

How much cars cost to run is a big focus for car owners, but despite spending £21 on petrol or diesel per week on average, most car owners believe they have a better social life thanks to owning a car.

Even though people may complain that their car costs them money, more than a third of people choose to drive somewhere that’s less than a mile away.

Motorists don’t seem to spend much on the upkeep of their cars either – 50% of drivers say they spend less than £20 a month on upkeep.

Credit cards can save you money

How do men and women differ when it comes to their cars and driving habits? Half of men will happily just go for a drive, whereas almost two thirds of women would never do that.

Women seem to appreciate having a car more than men. More women (70%) than men (58%) think they have a better social life because of their car (58%) but nine out of 10 women also believe that they have more freedom due to having a car.

Women are more family and friend orientated, as they drive to visit people more often than men do. As we get older the amount of time we spend driving to see family increases. However, overall, people drive to see their friends more than they drive to see family.

Over the years our attitudes towards our cars change. Despite their reputation, 18-24 year olds seem to take the most pride in their cars and spend the most on cleaning/valeting their cars each month, whereas driver over 55 only spend £3 a month on cleaning their car. Interestingly it’s people above the age of 55 that feel they have the most freedom due to having a car.

Used car dealership, The Car People, have developed a cool interactive tool which answers all sorts of questions about the cost of car ownership.

UK’s favourite car colour revealed

White was the UK’s most popular new car colour for fourth consecutive year in 2016, according to data published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

More than half a million new car buyers chose the colour last year – a fifth of all registrations – although figures show its popularity is starting to fade with demand falling -2.1%, the first drop since 2005.

Top 10 car coloursWhite and black are the nation’s two favourite car colours – of the 2.69 million new cars registered in 2016, white (552,329) and black (542,862) took more than 40% market share. While white maintained its lead in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, in England it was overtaken by black as the new car colour of choice.

Nationally, the third and fourth most popular colours were grey and blue, both gaining market share. Meanwhile, yellow cars appeared in the top 10 for the first time since 2013 at the expense of mauve, which dropped to 11th place.

Regionally, black topped the chart in the South East while also overtaking white as the favourite new car colour in East Anglia and the West Midlands. However, white continued to be most popular across the rest of the country, with buyers in the South West, East Anglia, East Midlands, Yorkshire and the North all following the national trend.

Silver saw the biggest volume decline, falling 22,209, with 273,220 buyers choosing it compared with 843,870 in its heyday back in 2004, while a 44% rise in demand for bronze cars saw a record 8,902 people spec the colour in 2016.

Drivers taking risks for food on the move

A shocking number of British motorists are risking their own lives and others to consume food and drink behind the wheel.

Research carried out on behalf of convicted driver insurance experts, Insurance Revolution, reveals that more than 40% of drivers regularly eat and drink tea or coffee whilst driving.

One in five (19%) hold a hot drink while driving, while more than 10% admit to having lost control, almost having an accident or actually having an accident because they were eating or drinking at the same time as driving their vehicle.

Most drivers (55%) are aware of the dangers of eating and drink whilst behind the wheel, but despite this, just under 20% do not use a cup holder for their drinks.

While it is still legal to drink and eat whilst driving under UK law, if you are found to not be in control of your vehicle, you could be prosecuted for careless driving.

“British drivers are taking huge risks in drinking hot beverages,” said Mark Rigby of Insurance Revolution.

“It may seem inconsequential, but one spill or a quick glance downwards to put a coffee in the cup holder is all that’s needed for an incident to occur.

“This type of behaviour falls under driving without due care or attention, and can lead to severe penalties.”

Survey reveals tired drivers are taking risks

One in five British motorists have almost nodded off at the wheel, according to new research.

The study by www.VoucherCodesPro.co.uk also revealed that more than three quarters of these respondents said they didn’t stop at a service station because they were on a “tight schedule”.

A further 9% divulged that they had previously fallen asleep whilst driving. These participants were asked whether the incident led to a crash, to which 68% stated it had.

A total of 2,387 British adults were quizzed, all of whom revealed to researchers that they held a valid driving license and owned their own car.

Initially all respondents were asked ‘Do you frequently have to drive for more than three hours at a time?’ to which 51% stated they did. Next, participants were asked if they had ever seen a sign warning about the dangers of being tired and driving, to which 91% stated they had.

Participants were asked “Do you believe that drinking coffee or energy drinks help you stay awake at the wheel?” to which 41% did and the remaining 59% did not. Respondents were then asked the same thing about fresh air which 54% thought was an effective way to stay awake at the wheel.

Nearly a quarter (23%) of people told researchers that they believed continuing to drive keeps them awake as it “keeps their brain busy”.

“The results to this study really do worry me; we should all know by now that if we are tired and we’re driving, we should stop,” said George Charles of VoucherCodesPro.co.uk.

“There is no way that continuing to drive keeps you awake and in fact doing this is not only putting your life at risk but also anyone else on the road at that time.

“If you are tired and you still have a long journey ahead of you, go to a service station and get a coffee, have a nap or get some fresh air. You might be on a tight schedule but it’s better to turn up late then not turn up at all!”

McLaren 570GT review

The McLaren 570GT is like no other McLaren. With chassis, suspension, steering and styling tweaks, extra luggage space and more creature comforts, it’s the most practical and comfortable McLaren ever.

Maybe it’s just me, but I struggle to distinguish between McLaren models, but with the 570GT there’s an obvious giveaway. Just to the rear of the panoramic glass roof sits a ‘piano lid’ glass hatch, or ‘touring deck’ as McLaren has dubbed it.

McLaren 570GT Open it up and it would be exaggerating to call it cavernous, but that extra 220 litres, added to the 150 litres under the front bonnet, means that that the GT is instantly more useable than its sibling, the 570S.

For me the GT is also more attractive than the more hardcore S It still has a carbon fibre chassis, trademark scissor (dihedral) doors, but it’s lost the flying buttresses and now seems sleeker.

McLaren 570GT It also uses the same twin-turbocharged 3.8-litre V8 as the 570S which pushes out 562bhp and an impressive 443lb ft of torque.

In other words, the GT has some serious grunt and is blisteringly fast, reaching 62mph from a standstill in a dizzying 3.4 seconds and a top speed of 204mph. It sounds awesome too.

McLaren 570GT Of course, I could only sample a fraction of its performance on UK roads, but it’s one of those rare cars that is as refined or explosive as you want it to be.

Power is sent to the rear wheels shod with mighty 285/35/R20 rear Pirelli P Zero tyres via an impressive 7-speed dual-clutch ‘Seamless Shift Gearbox’. At least, that’s the default position – there’s also the option to change gear manually using paddles behind the steering wheel.

McLaren 570GT You can also toggle between the drive modes – Normal, Sport and Track. Frankly, leaving the GT in Normal mode is more than enough. The suspension is noticeably firmer in Sport, while the engine and gear changes get rather more aggressive. Track is hardcore and best left to, er, track days.

So, driving the GT is more civilised than the 570S. The ride is more compliant, the noise levels in the cabin are pleasant and it’s a far more comfortable experience all round.

McLaren 570GT However, press on and it’s a beast unleashed. Tamed yes, but still enough to put a smile on your face. In fact, I’d go as far as to say that on regular roads in normal conditions it has exceptional driving manners.  We’re talking totally assured handling.

Ok, it may not have the interior visibility of a regular road car, but it can genuinely be driven just about anywhere – you can even raise the ride height for speed bumps if necessary.

McLaren 570GT The GT also features an engine start-stop system for extra economy – a first on a McLaren. For the record, officially it’ll average 26.6mpg, which isn’t bad for a supercar, and it emits 249g/km of CO2.

Beautifully made (it takes 188 man hours and 370 highly trained personnel to build one) and stand-out-from-the-crowd gorgeous, the 570GT makes for a compelling grand tourer proposition, if you have £154,000 to spend.

McLaren 570GT Verdict: The McLaren 570GT is refined, luxurious and practical – a grown-up sports car – but never underestimate the beast that lies beneath. Needless to say, I’ve now added the 570GT to my lottery-win wishlist. Bring it on.

Road tax hikes for most new car buyers

Seven out of 10 drivers are set to pay more tax under new VED (Vehicle Excise Duty) rules which come into force on April 1.

According to research by HonestJohn.co.uk, the majority of new car buyers will lose out, adding more than £500 to the long-term running costs of Britain’s most-popular and eco-friendly vehicles, while providing significant benefits for some of the most-polluting cars.

This means the UK’s best-selling car – the Ford Fiesta 1.0 EcoBoost 100PS – will cost £540 more to tax over four years, while buyers of the V8 Mustang stand to save £245 over the same period of time. This is despite the fact that the American muscle car emits three times more CO2 than the efficient Fiesta.

Until now, the government has offered zero VED to entice car buyers into eco-friendly vehicles. However, with 74% of new cars emitting less than 130g/km of CO2, the government has made a U-turn on its policy and introduced rules to force buyers of new, efficient cars to pay more.

Under the current tax rules, vehicles that emit sub-99g/km qualify for zero VED for the first year and pay nothing for every year after. From April 1, the government will replace the current 13 band tax system with three new bands – zero, standard, premium – plus a surcharge for electric cars with a list price above £40,000.

This means all new cars bought after April 1 with sub-99g/km CO2 emissions will pay for road tax – a move that will add up to £540 to the long-term running costs of some of Britain’s cleanest and most efficient cars.

Even hybrids won’t escape, with buyers of the Toyota Prius paying an extra £405 over four years, while Tesla S buyers will have to pay an additional £930.

Five popular cars hit hard by 2017 VED changes over four years of ownership…

1) Ford Fiesta 1.0 EcoBoost 100PS Zetec

Current VED cost over four years: £0
New VED cost over four years: £540

2) Vauxhall Corsa 1.3 CDTi 95PS ecoFlex Design

Current VED cost over four years: £0
New VED cost over four years: £540

3) Ford Focus 1.5 TDCi 120PS Zetec

Current VED cost over four years: £0
New VED cost over four years: £540

4) Volkswagen Golf BlueMotion 1.6 TDI 110PS

Current VED cost over four years: £0
New VED cost over four years: £520

5) Nissan Qashqai 1.5 dCi 110PS Visia

Current VED cost over four years: £0
New VED cost over four years: £540

Car insurance premiums accelerating

The cost of motor insurance is continuing to rise. Over the last 12 months, prices have increased by 14% – equivalent to £95 – on average.

This means a driver can now expect to pay £767 for a typical comprehensive car insurance policy – the costliest amount since mid-2012 when the average premium stood at £797.

According to the latest Confused.com car insurance price index, powered by Willis Towers Watson, some motorists have been hit harder than others.

In particular, older drivers continue to see the greatest increases. Comprehensive premiums have never been higher for many drivers in their sixties and seventies – those aged 62 (£481), 63 (£494), 64 (£450), 68 (£515), and 71+ (£495), for example, are all experiencing their highest premiums ever. And at 10%, drivers aged 71+ have seen their biggest ever quarterly increase.

Meanwhile, despite teenage drivers only paying between 56% and 75% of their maximum ever premiums, the cost of car insurance for younger drivers remains, by comparison, eye-wateringly high.

Average premiums for people aged 26 and under are all over £1,000. And, after 18 months of 18-year-old drivers typically paying the highest premiums, it’s the nation’s youngest drivers, those aged 17, who now pay the most (£2,112).

Motorists aged 60 and over, by contrast, can still typically expect to pay less than £500 (the exception being those aged 68 who pay £515 on average).

Both male and female drivers have seen their premiums rise substantially over the last 12 months. However, males have seen prices accelerate more than their female counterparts, climbing by 15% (+£104 year-on-year) and 13% (+£84 year-on-year) respectively.

“Drivers are now paying £95 more on average for an annual comprehensive car insurance policy than they did during the same period in 2015,” said Amanda Stretton, motoring editor at Confused.com.

“With the average premium standing at £767, the cost of car insurance hasn’t been this high for over four and half years. What’s more, as prices continue to climb, it seems only a matter of time before we’re back at the £858 peak we saw in 2011.”

Skoda Octavia vRS review

The Skoda Octavia isn’t the Czech car maker’s biggest-selling car globally for nothing. Good looking, spacious, well-equipped and fantastic value for money, it’s hard to fault.

Then to cap it all, the Octavia is also available in sport vRS spec – a hidden gem of a car if ever there was one.

Skoda Octavia vRS

Available as a hatchback or estate, I tested the vRS 230 hatch, priced from £26,580. Looking seriously cool in Meteor Grey, it boasts crisp, smart lines and more than a hint of aggression thanks to an all-black ensemble of 19-inch ‘Xtreme’ allow wheels, rear spoiler, door mirrors, front grille and exhaust pipes, plus reasonably discreet ‘vRS’ badging.

Inside, there are red stripes and multi-colour ‘vRS’ branding on the leather sports seats, while extra kit includes sat-nav and a lap timer.

Skoda Octavia vRS

The interior is well put together and comfortable with good visibility, but it’s the overall space in the front and back that’s remarkable The same can be said for the boot which boasts 590 litres, or a massive 1,580 litres, with the rear seats folded. Needless to say, the estate version have van-like proportions.

Under the bonnet, there’s an extra 10bhp under the bonnet, compared to a standard vRS, with the ‘230’ referring to the 230PS metric engine horsepower output of the 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, also seen in the VW Golf GTI no less.

Skoda Octavia vRS

All that power (227bhp if you prefer) translates into 0-62mph in just 6.7 seconds and a top speed of 155mph.

Fire her up, slip it into gear and drive off, and it’s clear that this is no ordinary car. Not only does it seem faster than the official figures claim, but that glorious exhaust note is something to behold.

Skoda Octavia vRS

For supreme traction you should move up to the 4×4 version, but frankly the electro-mechanical front locking differential does a great job on the 230 at taming all those horses.

Press the ‘vRS’ button on the centre console and you’re also able to adjust certain engine, transmission and handling characteristics, depending on the mode selected.

Skoda Octavia vRS

My car was fitted with a slick 6-speed manual gearbox, but a superb DSG auto is also available if you just want to concentrate on the driving. And you might want to do just that because the vRS 230 is entertaining to drive. Despite the fact that it’s the biggest ‘hot hatch’ out there, it handles superbly and enjoys being hustled, though some may find the ride a little firm.

With a claimed 45.4mpg, a maximum 5-star Euro NCAP crash safety rating and bags of space, the Octavia makes complete sense as a practical everyday car that can also thrill.

And as if all that isn’t good enough, the Octavia has received a series of enhancements for spring 2017, including a slightly new look and improved technology.

Skoda Octavia vRS 2017

The most obvious changes are to the car’s styling. At the front, the headlights feature full-LED technology (with adaptive front headlights optional), plus there’s a wider grille and air inlets, and a redesigned bumper. At the rear, there are new LED tail lights.

Inside, there are new infotainment systems – the top-of-the-range Columbus version comes with a 9.2-inch touch-screen display and includes Wi-Fi hotspot and Phonebox inductive smartphone charging, while Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, MirrorLink and SmartGate are all standard.

And finally for 2017, the 227bhp engine is now standard, so that extra power can be enjoyed by all vRS customers.

Bugatti Veyron 16.4 vs Rimac Concept_One

Watch petrolhead peer Lord Pembroke’s Bugatti Veyron and Mate Rimac’s Concept_One go head-to-head on track.

Lord Pembroke can’t resist a challenge, so when the chance came to pitch his pride and joy against the latest technological tour de force from Croatia – the Rimac Concept_One electric supercar – he didn’t have to think twice.

The founder of the Wilton Classic & Supercar show – which relaunches this year as the UK’s most prestigious and exclusive annual supercar and classics gathering – swapped cars with Rimac’s official test driver, Miroslav Zrncevic.

“Looking forward to the technologies driving future performance will be one of the most fascinating elements of the new Wilton Classic & Supercar event,” says Lord Pembroke, “and we wanted to get to know our new friends at Rimac – builders of the world’s fastest accelerating supercar – as part of that journey of discovery.

“It’s fair to say the Wilton team returned from Croatia having been blown away by the technology built into the Concept_One, and awed by the single-minded dedication of the man behind it. Now we can’t wait to share some of that Rimac magic at our new event on June 3-4.”

Advance tickets – the same price for Saturday and Sunday – are now available to buy from www.wiltonclassicsupercar.co.uk and priced from £25 per day for adults or £37.50 for the weekend.

Unprepared younger drivers at risk on winter roads

New research has revealed that most younger motorists don’t know basic car maintenance, leaving two million cars unprepared for the treacherous winter road conditions.

More than 55% of drivers aged 17-25 questioned by Cooper BMW were not fully competent with tasks such as maintaining oil and water levels and checking tyre pressures.

For instance, one in three cannot competently check the pressure in their tyres.

When asked whether they could check the water level in their car, older drivers were increasingly better prepared, with 79% saying they were fully competent, compared to just 43% of younger drivers.

One in two younger motorists don’t fully understand the consequences of poor upkeep of their car. Those with the best understanding of the consequences have owned their car for longer than 16 years and are likely to have experienced a breakdown or two in their time.

“Winter can be a dangerous time on the roads, not just in terms of accidents or breaking down, but with people getting stranded in their cars without suitably warm clothing, provisions, or the right equipment to get them back on the road,” said Dino Dichello at Cooper BMW.

“It’s important that drivers are proactive in the upkeep of their vehicles, and don’t just wait for the worst to happen.”

Suzuki Ignis review

You’ve got to hand it to Suzuki. Just months after the launch of the surprisingly good Baleno supermini comes another intriguing newcomer in the compact and unique shape of the Ignis.

In one fell swoop, Suzuki has carved a new niche with the cute little Ignis – a mini crossover with arguably no direct competitors.

With bold and original styling, a punchy, economical engine, plus safety tech and four-wheel drive available, the Ignis is a pint-sized marvel.

Suzuki Ignis

Not to be confused with the largely forgettable hatchback of the same name last sold in 2008, the all-new Ignis is priced from just £9,999.

Instantly recognisable from all angles, it’s looks particularly cheeky from the front. However, it’s those chunky C pillars and its trapezoid, upright rear that will divide opinion. Whether its looks work for you or not, the Ignis stands out in so many other ways.

There are three trim levels – SZ3, SZ-T and SZ5. Standard features across the range include DAB radio, Bluetooth, air-conditioning, body-coloured wing mirrors and six airbags.

Suzuki Ignis

However, it’s worth looking over each grade in depth because some features such as the 7-inch touchscreen, cruise control and rear parking camera are not available on the base model, meaning that the mid-range SZ-T offers the best value.

At launch, the Ignis is available with a 1.2-litre Dualjet petrol engine, plus a slightly more powerful SHvS “mild” hybrid version of the same unit.

In a nutshell, SHvS (Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki) is a compact and lightweight system that acts as both a generator and starter motor, assisting the engine during vehicle take off and acceleration and also generating electricity through regenerative braking. In other words, it has a bit more oomph.

Suzuki Ignis

The basic 89bhp naturally-aspirated unit, which can be mated to a five-speed manual or automatic transmission, may not be the most powerful of engines, but thanks to the car’s light weight, it’s enough to propel it to 62mph in 13.5 seconds and a top speed of 106mph. On paper it’s capable of 61.4mpg, while CO2 emissions are a low 104g/km.

Go for the range-topping hybrid engine in the SZ5 and the 0-62mph comes down to 11.4 seconds, as do CO2 emissions to 97g/km, meaning that it’s road tax free too. As an added bonus, the economy goes up to 65.7mpg.

Inside, the Ignis is surprisingly spacious for such a small car. At 3.7 metres long and 1.7m wide, it’s closer to a Fiat 500 than a Nissan Juke, for instance.

Suzuki Ignis

The front seats are comfortable, the seating position is fairly high and there’s plenty of headroom for taller people thanks to the lofty roof. Obviously it’s cosier in the back, but it’s adequate for two adults which is more than you can say for most cars of this size. However, the car’s high waist, privacy glass and C pillar styling blot out some of the light in the back.

The SZ3 model has a fixed rear seat and a luggage area of 267 litres behind, but here’s the clever bit. The SZ-T and SZ5 models have a split rear seat and each one can slide 165mm to provide either greater luggage capacity or more rear passenger leg room.

There are no soft-touch premium plastics in this no-nonsense cabin, but what do you expect from a sub £10,000 car?

Suzuki Ignis

The instrument binnacle ahead of the driver is minimalist and functional, while the basic 7-inch touchscreen in the centre console does the job (ie sat nav, radio and full connectivity via Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and Mirrorlink), even if it does look like a slight afterthought.

Opt for the flagship SZ5 model and you get Dual Camera Brake Support, which can detect objects (including pedestrians) in the car’s path, alert the driver and apply the brakes if necessary. This system enabled the SZ5 to be awarded a maximum five stars in Euro NCAP tests.

The Ignis is easy to drive with light steering and a tight turning circle, making it perfect for urban driving – its natural habit. Push it at higher speeds on more challenging roads and it’s a little more unsettled and there’s some body roll. That said, it will cruise quite happily on a motorway.

Suzuki Ignis

The engine is reasonably refined, but gets harsher when pushed. The mild hybrid version provides a slight power boost, meaning that the gears don’t have to be worked quite so hard.

Driven gently, the ride is fine, but it will bounce along at higher speeds or on uneven roads.

Complementing its cute styling, there’s also plenty of scope for personalisation with 11 colours choices available (two-tone Flame Orange Pear Metallic for me), plus interior trim options.

Suzuki Ignis

The clincher for some, especially if you live somewhere with more extreme weather conditions, might be the ALLGRIP ‘AUTO’ four-wheel drive option. It’s not a Land Rover, but it will offer a little more grip in slippery conditions or on rougher terrain. There’s even Hill Descent Control.

So the new Suzuki Ignis isn’t perfect, but it more than redeems itself in so many ways.

Verdict: Funky, surprisingly spacious, easy to drive, economical and competitively priced, it’s one of those classless cars that can fit in anywhere.

Review: @Gareth Herincx

Milestone as VW Golf overtakes Volvo in Sweden

Sweden’s best-selling car in 2016 was not a Volvo – the first time that’s happened in more than half a century.

Instead, the Volkswagen Golf was the No 1 car, according to the country’s carmakers’ association, Bil Sweden, which also reported a record 372,000 new registrations – up 8% on the 2015 figure.

VW Golf

Volvo was last knocked off top spot in 1962 by a Volkswagen Beetle.

It’s not all bad news for Chinese-owned Volvo – it’s still by far the biggest-selling brand in Sweden with four of its models occupying places in the Top 6.

The Volvo’s V70, the most popular car in Sweden for the past two decades, ceased production in favour of the newer V90 model during 2016, and it’s thought the new car will soon take over the top spot spot when it’s fully established.

Sweden is Volvo’s second biggest market, after China.
