Real-world fuel economy figures revealed

The gap between advertised and on-the-road MPG is now at its widest ever point, with just one in 10 cars managing to hit their official fuel economy figures, according to new claims.

Motoring website HonestJohn.co.uk analysed 118,000 Real MPG fuel reports, submitted by UK drivers, and found that an average car now uses 24% more fuel than it should.

The BMW X5 is the UK’s worst performing car for Real MPG, achieving 66.9% of its advertised fuel economy, followed by the Land Rover Discovery Sport and Audi A4 with a respective 67.5% and 68.3%.

At the opposite end of the scale the latest Mazda MX-5 is the UK’s best Real MPG performer, with an average of 101.5%.

Real MPG was launched in 2011 after HonestJohn.co.uk received thousands of complaints from readers that their cars could not match the ‘official’ EC fuel economy figures.

Fuel Gauge

Real MPG invites motorists to submit how many miles their cars actually do to the gallon, covering all major makes and models.

Unlike official (laboratory tested) fuel consumption figures, Real MPG gives real life comparative data and allows car owners and buyers to see how much on-the-road fuel a vehicle really uses.

One of the reasons new cars have performed increasingly poorly is because, since 2015, car manufacturers have been fined if the corporate average CO2 emissions of their cars exceeds 130g/km according to MPG and CO2 laboratory tests. To avoid the fines, vehicles are increasingly optimised for the laboratory test at the expense of reality.

From September 2017, the current NEDC (New European Driving Cycle) test for new cars will be replaced with the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP). However, while the WLTP should be more reflective of real world driving conditions and involve longer distances and higher speeds, it will still be laboratory-based.

“Real MPG has shown that, for the majority of drivers, advertised fuel economy figures are quite simply too good to be true,” explained Honest John’s Managing Editor, Daniel Powell.

“As a result, many are finding it increasingly difficult to understand how much fuel a car will use or how polluting it will be.

“We welcome the introduction of the new Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP), but it remains to be seen if this new laboratory-based test will provide the realistic figures that the public have been crying out for – there’s clearly a need for change in the way that MPG is measured, as the real world figures don’t reflect those of laboratories.”

Rolls-Royce celebrates British music legends

Nine unique Rolls-Royce Wraith cars have been commissioned to celebrate icons of the British music industry.

The first four Wraith ‘Inspired by British Music’ cars have been unveiled at a star-studded event in London by the artists who created them, in partnership with Rolls-Royce Motor Cars.

The stars involved in the project were personally invited to the home of Rolls-Royce in Goodwood, England, and worked in close partnership with Rolls-Royce’s design experts to conceive deeply personal expressions of their music legacies.

The unique cars created represent the ultimate collectors’ items for the most ardent fans of each artist and will be sold later in 2017, with Rolls-Royce donating a proportion of the value of each to charities selected by each artist, including the Teenage Cancer Trust.

The first artists honoured were The Who frontman Roger Daltrey, Sir Ray Davies of The Kinks, and producer and “fifth Beatle” Sir George Martin.

The final batch of hand-built Wraith models unveiled later in 2017 will feature Dame Shirley Bassey, Status Quo’s Francis Rossi and Ronnie Wood of the Rolling Stones.

Ways to pay for your new car

Deciding to buy a new car can be really exciting, but working out how to pay for it can be hard. We’ve teamed up with www.money.co.uk to give you the options available…

Cash

If you have a lump sum of money already saved for your car, then using cash can have an advantage as you’ll own the car outright straight away. This means you won’t be charged interest on your purchase. You also won’t need to worry about making monthly repayments.

Before using your savings make sure you’d still be able to manage if something went wrong. It’s important you don’t leave yourself high and dry.

PCP (Personal Contract Purchase)

This is where you pay a deposit upfront and then pay monthly repayments which usually last between two and four years.

When you come to the end of your deal, you can either:

  • Give the car back
  • Pay the rest of the balance off so you own the car
  • Part exchange the car for a new one using any equity you have

If you decide to pay off the balance and buy the car, it’ll cost the guaranteed future value (GFV) that was agreed at the beginning of your PCP deal. PCP deals are a good option if you want to change your car every few years.

It’s also worth remembering that the finance company is almost always the legal owner of the car if you take out a PCP deal. You are the registered keeper of the car, but not the actual legal owner.

Hire purchase

This is where you pay a deposit upfront and then pay off the rest of the car’s value over a fixed period with the intention that you own the vehicle by the end. You don’t own the vehicle outright until your final payment.

These are good if you don’t have much of a deposit, however it does mean monthly repayments are often more expensive than PCP plans.

Personal loans

There are a few advantages to using a personal loan:

  • You own the car straight away by paying up front
  • You get to choose the loan term
  • You have set monthly payments

The total cost of the loan depends on the interest rate. Compare interest rates before applying and check the terms to see if there are charges for repaying in full early.

If you’ve got bad credit a personal loan is likely to be pretty expensive so other options should be considered. Take a look at a comparison site to see how much a loan could cost you and then compare it to your other options.

Credit cards can save you money

Credit cards

The type of credit card you use can make all the difference. It can be a cost-effective way of buying your car outright if you plan it and make your credit cards work for you.

Your options include:

  • Use a 0% purchase credit card to pay for the car and then split the repayments over your interest free period so you pay it off before you get charged interest.
  • You can pay on a cashback or reward credit card and then use a 0% balance transfer or use your savings to pay it off before you get charged interest.
  • Always check if you’ll be charged a fee before using a credit card. The fee could mean it isn’t the cheapest option for you.

In summary

How to pay for your car really depends on your own personal circumstance and whether you have any savings or not.

You should always make sure that you’re positive you’ll be able to afford whichever option you choose so that you won’t be leaving yourself in a sticky situation.

Mobiles phone use ‘safer than speeding’

A quarter of British motorists think it is better to drive while using a mobile phone than speeding, according to new research.

The findings emerged from a survey of 2,000 motorists after tough new legislation came in to introduce an increase in fines for those caught driving while using a handset, and penalty points for those caught first time.

Researchers also found two thirds of drivers knowingly drive over the speed limit, but only one in 10 had been caught during the last 24 months.

And despite clear signage indicating the acceptable limits on all roads, 45% of people think it is acceptable to drive faster than they’re meant to.

While seven in 10 drivers admit to intentionally slowing down to pass a speed camera, immediately speeding back up once past.

“It’s clear many motorists don’t see speeding as a particularly serious offence, and most admit they break the speed limit,” said Alistair Hargreaves, head of service for car insurer, Admiral.

“We wanted to find out where motorists rank speeding in seriousness compared with a range of other offences and bad driving habits.

“Nearly one in four thinks using a phone while driving is less serious than speeding.”

Harsher penalty

Both offences carry a penalty, but recently the government increased the punishment for anyone caught using their phone behind the wheel – you now face a £200 and 6 points on your licence.

“Attitudes to speeding on motorways are particularly relaxed for a lot of drivers, and the majority would like the government to raise the speed limit from 70mph.

The study shows 46% of motorists don’t think driving 80 miles per hour in a 70 mile per hour zone is a particularly serious driving offence.

Which is why 84% of people admit to have broken the law on Britain’s motorways, compared to 64% cent on dual carriageways.

A third of drivers say they do tend to speed on urban roads, while 27% have gone faster than they should on residential streets.

A further 51% of people think suffering a bout of road rage is a more dangerous offence than speeding, while half of those polled think tailgating is worse.

For 28% of people on the road, undertaking is considered a bigger problem than speeding.

Driving a car with defective tyres is a worse offence according to 55% of people, as is failing to stop at a pedestrian crossing for 49%.

Even driving in the middle lane when the inside lane is clear is more of a crime according to 21% of respondents.

On the flipside, one in 10 people polled believe speeding is worse than driving under the influence of alcohol.

In addition, speeding is considered a bigger offence than driving while under the influence of drugs for 24% of adults.

But when questioned about acceptable speed limits, folk are agreed the maximum should be 26 miles per hour on residential streets and 74 miles per hour on motorways.

The spokesman for Admiral Car Insurance continues: “Local authorities across the country are introducing 20mph speed limits on residential streets to try and reduce fatalities. Our research indicates motorists are willing to accept lower speed limits on these roads.

“Where motorists would like to see the speed limit raised is on motorways, that’s not surprising considering the majority already admit they drive above the limit on these roads.”

Tesla Model X review

When it was launched in 2012, the Tesla Model S sent shockwaves through the car industry. It didn’t just look good, but it drove well and its software (which included revolutionary autonomous driving tech) could be updated over-the-air.

Tesla’s battery technology was also ahead of its time, meaning that it had a longer range and could recharge faster than any other EVs.

The Model S has now been joined by the Model X SUV, with the reasonably priced Model 3 to follow. By 2020, Tesla is aiming to sell 500,000 cars a year.

Tesla Model XI’ll put my cards on the table. I’m a huge Model S fan, but even I needed to be won over by the Model X – a car that’s promoted as the “safest, fastest and most capable sport utility vehicle in history”.

First impressions count, and when you first see a Model X in the metal it’s clear that it’s a car like no other. Bigger than you might think (similar in size to a BMW X5, Porsche Cayenne, Range Rover Sport or Audi Q7), it’s clearly aerodynamic, but also surprisingly spacious inside.

Then there are those “Falcon-wing” rear doors, which aren’t just a party trick. Not only is access to the rear of the car impressive, but they are clever too. Thanks to sensors, the double-hinged doors open safely up then out, requiring only 30cm of space on the side of the vehicle and making it possible to park in tight spots. They have to be seen to be believed.

Tesla Model XBut it’s not just the doors and the space inside – what sets the Model X apart from the opposition is its clever packaging. With three rows of contoured seats, a front and rear boot, and room under the second row seats, meaning there’s ample room for people, luggage and other bulky items. It also has a futuristic, luxury feel.

It’s possible to spec the car with four, five, six or even seven seats. However, the third row is for children or small people unless the second row of seats is pushed forward.

And what about the mind-boggling windscreen. If you thought the Citroen C4 Grand Picasso had a whoppa, then think again. The word ‘panoramic’ doesn’t do the Model X’s justice. Frankly, it’s one of the lightest and airiest cabins you will ever experience.

Tesla Model XThe rest of the interior is not unlike the Model S before it, which is no bad thing. The cockpit is minimalist and it’s dominated by a giant 17-inch tablet in the centre console. Again, this is the car’s nerve centre. Did you know that a route can now be plotted for you, adding in a Supercharger stop if necessary – and it will even give a live indication as to whether the charging bays are full or not?

The Model X also offers 2268kg of towing capacity which is enough for most small caravans and trailers, making it the first electric car with anything approaching that kind of ability.

I tested the Model X 90D, which is priced from £89,300, though the on-the-road final cost of the car I drove (with optional extras) was an eye-watering £104,730.

Tesla Model XThe 90D (D for dual electric motors) boasts 90kWh of battery power. There are also 60, 75 and 100 KWh versions with ranges varying from 290-336 miles, topping out with the 100D.

With four-wheel drive and an equivalent power output from the electric motors (one at the front, one at the rear) of 682bhp, my Model X could sprint to 62mph in a blistering 3.7 seconds, and go on to a top speed of 155mph.

The first thing you notice about the Model X is that the driver’s seat is set quite high (presumably because there are batteries below), but you soon get used to the position and you’re left to marvel at the goldfish bowl-like visibility.

Tesla Model XDip the accelerator and you’re off in virtual silence, just a vague whoosh from the electric motors. Though when you’re travelling at faster speeds, there is a fair amount of wind and road noise (over some surfaces). That said, like most electric cars, it may just be that is it quieter overall, but because there’s no engine noise, other sounds are more obvious!

Overtaking is infectious and I don’t think the novelty would ever wear off, but the Model X is also a relaxed, comfortable cruiser. However, take your foot off the accelerator and the drop off in speed can be quite profound depending on your regenerative brake settings, so it’s best to experiment.

At 2.4 tonnes the Model X is pretty heavy and on challenging country roads it feels its weight. While it stays reasonably flat through the corners, it’s not as agile as a Model S.

Tesla Model X

It’s fair to say that the Model X isn’t quite the revelation that the Model S was and in some ways it has more in common with an MPV than an SUV, but it is distinctive, futuristic and very clever (I haven’t even touched on the autonomous tech it shares with the Model S).

The Model X is not perfect though. It’s not as driver-focused as the Model S and it’s a seven-seater at a squeeze. Also, the “Falcon-Wing” doors are a tad slow for some. The doors also mean that a box cannot be attached to the roof, though a “hitch rack” can be fitted to the back of the car.

However, one’s thing’s for sure – the Model X is another breath of fresh air from California. Literally, because it’s fitted with a HEPA filter system, which fills the cabin with “medical-grade air” no matter what’s happening outside. There are three modes – circulate with outside air, re-circulate inside air and a bioweapon defence mode which creates positive pressure inside the cabin to protect occupants.

Toyota’s UK vote of confidence

Toyota has announced that it will invest a further £240 million in its plant at Burnaston in Derbyshire.

Starting this year, the facility will be upgraded with new equipment, technologies and systems so that it can produce future vehicles using the new Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform.

By 2020, the majority of Toyota’s models will be built using TNGA platforms which already underpin the new Prius and the all-new C-HR crossover, which is built in Turkey.

“Our investment demonstrates that, as a company, we are doing all we can to raise the competitiveness of our Burnaston plant in Derbyshire,” said Dr Johan van Zyl, President and CEO of Toyota Motor Europe.

“Continued tariff-and-barrier free market access between the UK and Europe that is predictable and uncomplicated will be vital for future success.”

Toyota has been making cars in the UK since 1992 and the Burnaston factory employs about 2,500 people.

The Avensis, Auris and Auris Hybrid are currently produced at the site. In 2015, 239,728 British-built Toyota cars were manufactured at the giant plant.

Neighbours at war over parking

A ‘cold war’ exists between many households because of differences over parking, according to new research.

While the vast majority of motorists are satisfied with their neighbours’ parking, 14% describe their neighbours’ parking is ‘poor’ or ‘appalling’ (4%).

The RAC Insurance Home Parking survey reveals that the top issue for the aggrieved is the selfish way their neighbours park, with six in 10 (62%) citing this as the reason they chose the words ‘appalling’ or ‘poor’.

Two out of five (41%) were annoyed about neighbours parking in the street when they have the space to park on their own drives, while nearly a third (31%) complained they had been blocked in by neighbours parking across their drives.

To make matters worse, for three-quarters (73%) the ‘appalling’ and ‘poor’ parking behaviour takes place every day and for a quarter (26%) it has even led them to falling out or not speaking.

“Parking is a very sensitive issue, particularly when it’s outside your own home as it brings out the ‘Nimby’ in everyone,” said RAC Insurance’s Simon Williams.

“The moment someone parks selfishly people’s hackles are going to be raised, whether that’s parking in the street when they have the space to be able to park on their own drive or parking so close that it makes it almost impossible to get out.

“The overwhelming majority of people we surveyed described themselves as considerate parkers claiming they always leave plenty of space when they parallel park in the street and are careful to make sure they park squarely between the lines in a car park.

“These people are inevitably going to be far more sensitive to their neighbours’ parking habits and, if these poor practices recur on a daily basis, a ‘cold war’ might begin with neighbours not speaking or blatantly ignoring one another.

“The answer has to be for every motorist to take a little bit of extra time to think about how their parking might affect their neighbours and fellow drivers.”

BMW 5 Series review

The new BMW 520d M Sport is arguably the ‘Ultimate Diesel Driving Machine’. There, that got your attention. A little over-egging it perhaps, but the fact is that things don’t get much better than this executive express.

The irony of this assertion will not be lost on most of you, because the knives are out for diesel. All I can say is that I hope there is a stay of execution so as many new car buyers as possible can enjoy this phenomenal car.

It’s hard to believe, but this is the seventh generation of BMW’s sports saloon. As is often the case with BMWs, the new car’s differences externally are subtle to say the least. In fact, over the years it’s grown in size to the extent that today’s car is actually bigger than a 7 Series from the late ‘80s.

BMW 520dThe eagle-eyed amongst you will notice that the headlights now flow into the iconic kidney grille for the first time and all models in the range now sport dual exhaust pipes (circular for the SE and quadrilateral for M Sport).

Inside, the epic cabin is dominated by BMW’s infotainment touchscreen which has been upgraded from 6.5 inches to 10.25 – plus there’s a 12.3-inch digital display in the binnacle ahead of the driver. In short, it’s a special place to be and just hints at what’s to come when you hit the Start button.

Elsewhere, there’s plenty of clever tech not obvious to the eye. For instance, the kidney grille is now “Active Air Stream” which opens and closes depending on how much cooling the engine requires.

BMW 520dYou see, the new 5 Series is very slippery, the uber frugal 520d Efficient Dynamics (ED) version has a drag coefficient of just 0.22cd, making it the most aerodynamic car in its class,

Thanks to its steel, aluminium and magnesium structure, BMW claims it’s lighter than any of its rivals, which include the Jaguar XF, Audi A6 and Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

xDrive (BMW’s all-wheel drive system) is available on the 5 Series for the first time, plus tech innovations including remote control parking and gesture control (which allows the driver to perform tasks with the wave of a hand).

BMW 5 Series remote parkingMy focus here is on the 520d M Sport, which starts at £38,920 and is one up from the entry-level 520d SE. The exact model I tested had a £48,495 price tag because it was loaded with options, including the £1,495 Technology package and £1,995 M Sport Plus package.

Other noteworthy tech available includes Remote Control Parking which has to be seen to be believed. Using the BMW Display Key (a smart key fob), it’s possible to get out of the car and park it remotely – ideal if only a tight spot is available or you have a small garage. The same process in reverse allows you to start and drive the car out of its space.

The 520d will end up being the most popular model with fleet and private customers – and I can see why.

BMW 520dOn paper it sounds good, but not sensational. Its 2.0-litre four cylinder turbodiesel develops 188bhp, it can reach 62mph from standstill in 7.5 seconds and go on to a top speed of 146mpg. Crucially, this engine/car combination has fuel economy of up to 68.8mpg and emits just 108g/km of CO2.

Those hard stats are impressive, but here’s the thing – the 5 Series (even at this basic end of the range) is a cracking car to drive.

Not only is this diesel superbly refined, but it’s smooth and effortless. Now factor in remarkable handling and you have a compelling proposition.

BMW 520dWe drove the car on sweeping country roads, plus twisty hill sections and it behaved impeccably. Totally planted with enough power for even the keener drivers amongst us, there was barely a hint of body roll.

Working in perfect harmony with the slick ZF 8-speed automatic gearbox (now standard on every 5 Series) and responsive steering, it’s easy to lose sight of the fact that you’re driving a relatively big car with a 2.0-litre diesel engine.

The ride is superb, but this is partly because our test car was fitted with Variable Damper Control (VDC). A £985 option, it offers three driving modes (Comfort, Sport and Adaptive), along with a more forgiving ride. Ultimately, there’s an overwhelming sense of composure and agility.

BMW 520dOn a practical level, the cabin feels modern,  oozes quality and feels spacious. There’s definitely room for taller passengers in the back, though anyone sitting in the middle will have to straddle the transmission tunnel.

The boot is enormous, boasting a 530-litre capacity with a small loading lip and wide aperture. Opt for the folding rear seats and the space is even more useful. With a central cubbyhole, cup holders, door bins and a glovebox, there’s also plenty of space to store smaller items.

Frankly, the BMW 520d M Sport is hard to fault, which is saying something when it’s up against quality rivals including the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Jaguar XF and Audi A6.

Verdict: BMW has set a new benchmark with the seventh-generation 5 Series. No other car in its class can offer the same combination of driver engagement, state-of-the-art tech, build quality, performance and economy.

Bridgestone chasing the Olympic dream

Athletics legend Daley Thompson helps tyre giant Bridgestone launch its Worldwide Olympic Partnership.

The double Olympic decathlon gold medallist was joined by Rio gold medal winning diver Chris Mears and UK golfer Charley Hull who tied seventh on her Olympic Games debut in Rio aged just 20.

Starring role for new SEAT Leon Cupra 300

SEAT pulls at the heartstrings with new Leon Cupra 300 campaign.

A classy new advert, produced by ad agency Droga5, tells the simple story of a race car confined to the track.

Award-winning director Noam Murro focuses on two cars. The trapped race car that longs for the freedom of the open road the new SEAT Leon Cupra 300 that can enjoy the exhilaration of the world’s highways.

Dustin O’Halloran, who was Oscar-nominated for his original score on the film “Lion”, composed and arranged a special soundtrack for the film.

“The new SEAT Leon CUPRA 300HP is the fastest and most powerful street car that SEAT has ever produced,” explained SEAT’s Susanne Franz.

“To underscore this moment, we wanted to make a bold statement about the fact that 60% of this car’s design and performance DNA is shared with our award-winning Cup Racer formula.

“‘A race car set free’ sets an exciting new tone for CUPRA and, alongside our sponsorship of this year’s Superbike World Championship and Ducati MotoGP team, begins to establish its pedigree as a mark of high performance.”

Fiat’s ‘Forever 500’ birthday film

Special short film to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the iconic Fiat 500 is released.

Fiat has launched a series of activities and events to mark the diamond jubilee of the Cinquino (as Fiat calls it) – a car that has been a much-loved part of popular culture since 1957.

Surrealist British animator Cyriak’s 90-second film, called Forever 500, shows the evolution of the Fiat 500 from its first appearance to its latest incarnation in 2017 – the Fiat 500-60th Limited Edition.

Fiat approached Krow communications with a brief to mark the Fiat 500’s anniversary with a celebration of its enduring style.

“For 60 years the Fiat 500 has had an engaging style and as its gorgeous looks have evolved, that twinkle in the eye has stayed the same,” said Krow Executive Creative Director Nick Hastings.

“Cryriak’s surreal and irreverent creations perfectly capture what the 500 has been, and always will be.”

Fittipaldi unveils his dream supercar

Motor racing legend Emerson Fittipaldi and iconic Italian design house Pininfarina have teamed up to create a carbon fibre track-day supercar.

Combining “racing technology and breathtaking design with drivability and the highest safety requirements”, the Fittipaldi EF7 Vision Gran Turismo by Pininfarina is powered by a normally-aspirated 4.8-litre V8, good for some 600bhp.

Like other Gran Turismo-named vehicles, it will be added to PlayStation’s Gran Turismo game. However, unlike most other GT concepts, the Fittipaldi EF7 Vision will also go into production – in limited numbers.  It’s thought each car will cost in the region of $1 million (£820,000).

Emerson Fittipaldi with his Fittipaldi EF7 Vision Gran Turismo by Pininfarina“Owner-drivers can expect reliability, lower maintenance cost, and minimal mechanic and tech teams – which means more time and elation on the track,” says Fittipaldi.

The ultra-light supercar fuses the vision of F1 and Indy Car racing champion Fittipaldi, Pininfarina and race-bred German engineering firm HWA AG, and fulfills Fittipaldi’s dream to produce a car with fierce track-racing capabilities, for drivers of all skill levels.

“I have tried for years to explain to others what it truly feels like to be behind the steering wheel of a championship racecar,” added Fittipaldi.

“There is adrenaline and elation all rolled into an awe-inspiring inner fulfillment that leaves you craving for more. This is what our dream team created in the EF7 Vision Gran Turismo by Pininfarina.”

The EF7’s exceptional yet forgiving handling and performance, will be achieved through a powerful V8 engine, integrated gearbox, suspension and braking system developed by HWA AG, and an ultra-lightweight, all carbon fibre chassis construction with an exceptionally low center of gravity.

Fittipaldi EF7 Vision Gran Turismo by PininfarinaThe carbon fibre monocoque is a specially designed safety capsule for both driver and passenger, enabling drivers to feel comfortable in the car, even while at its limits.

“I have had the privilege to work with many great teams in my life on and off the track, but this project took me to new heights, co-creating with the masters of legendary car design and race-winning engineering,” said Fittipaldi, who began his journey to create a supercar three years ago.

The EF7 Vision Gran Turismo by Pininfarina will have a limited production with every EF7 owner having the opportunity to benefit from personal coaching by Emerson Fittipaldi himself and they will move up a driver-training ladder designed by the racing champion.

In addition, owners will be able to join the Fittipaldi Racing Club which will provide exclusive VIP high-performance driving and racing experiences at some of the world’s premier racing circuits, led by Fittipaldi and other racing professionals.

Fittipaldi EF7 Vision Gran Turismo by Pininfarina Owners will also have bespoke customisation options to personalize their EF7, complete with car interior and exterior options, multiple wheel options and personal Pantone colour and racing numbers, along with Emerson Fittipaldi signature branding.

Meanwhile, supercar fans and video game enthusiasts will have the opportunity to experience the EF7 in the virtual world when it becomes exclusively available in the upcoming PlayStation 4 videogame, Gran Turismo Sport.

“I won my first Formula 1 Championship at 25 years old, in a time when driving skill, team effort and technology played critical roles,” said Fittpaldi.

“In 2017, we are on a new horizon where real world and virtual world motorsports are merging and this is truly remarkable. Our partners, Gran Turismo, are the leaders in virtual racing field worldwide and we are truly excited to be working with them.”

Peugeot 3008 crowned Car of the Year

The acclaimed new Peugeot 3008 SUV has edged out the Alfa Romeo Giulia to win the title of European Car of the Year (ECOTY).

The distinctive car, complete with the i-Cockpit digital display across the range, also beat the Citroen C3, Mercedes-Benz E-class, Nissan Micra, Toyota C-HR and Volvo S90/V90.

The jury of 58 motoring journalists from 22 European countries awarded the 3008 SUV 319 points, ahead of the Alfa Romeo’s 296 points, with the Mercedes E-class in third place with 197 points.

The 3008 is the the fifth Peugeot to win the Car of the Year prize and the first SUV to be honoured with the accolade in the competition’s history. Peugeot’s success in the awards dates all the way back to 1969, when the 504 saloon scooped the title.

It’s been a big day for the French brand. Earlier it (PSA Group) announced that it has finalised a deal to buy Vauxhall-Opel from General Motors for £1,9 billion, making it Europe’s No 2 manufacturer after Volkswagen.

Aston Martin Valkyrie: a gift from the gods

The revolutionary hypercar being co-developed by Aston Martin and Red Bull Advanced Technologies, formerly identified by its codename AM-RB 001, has now been officially named the Aston Martin Valkyrie.

Joins Valkyrie joins the famous lineage of Aston Martin ‘V’ cars stretching back seven decades, including the Virage, Vulcan and Vanquish.

The naming convention began in 1951 with Vantage, which was selected to distinguish high performance variants of the then current model, the DB2. The first time the Vantage badge appeared was on the side of the DB5.

In Norse mythology “The Valkyrie” is a literal translation of “Chooser of the slain” – female figures who select who may live and who may die in battle. The Valkyrie then bring half of those slain on the battlefield to Valhalla – the afterlife governed by Odin, Ruler of the Gods.

The Aston Martin Valkyrie, which is not expected to go into limited production until 2018, boasts a 1:1 power-to-weight ratio and is powered by a mid-mounted Cosworth 6.5-litre V12 engine expected to produce 900bhp.

Ford Fiesta ST200 review

Sometimes it’s possible to take a car for a spin and know within seconds that you’re driving something special. The Ford Fiesta ST200 is a prime example.

With the seventh generation Fiesta arriving in showrooms later in 2017, the ST200 is the last hurrah for the Mk6 – Britain’s bestselling car for the past eight years.

Ford has saved the best till last with the ST200 – a near perfect hot hatch. Priced from £23,145, it’s a car that doesn’t break any records for power, acceleration or top speed, but it is honest, affordable fun in an intoxicating little package.

Ford Fiesta ST200Under the bonnet sits a 1.6-litre 197bhp turbocharged petrol engine (up from the standard ST’s 180bhp). And just to show how things have moved on, that’s twice the power offered by its Fiesta XR2 predecessor 20 years ago.

But here’s the thing, when the ‘overboost’ kicks in, it gives you an extra 15bhp for up to 20 seconds on full throttle.

The powerful ‘EcoBoost’ engine is paired to a slick 6-speed manual gearbox and is capable of propelling the car to 62mph from standstill in 6.7 seconds and a top speed of 143mph. It doesn’t run out of puff either – acceleration from 31-82mph takes just 5.2 seconds in fourth gear.

Ford Fiesta ST200Officially it’s capable of returning 46.3mpg, but the ST200 is one of those cars that are almost impossible to drive economically, so expect closer to 30mpg or less.

It looks the part too. My test car came in a seriously moody Storm Grey and featured reasonably subtle ‘ST200’ badging, a unique ST design body kit including a rear spoiler, privacy glass, twin chrome exhaust pipes, matt black 17-inch alloy wheels and red brake callipers.

Inside there are splendidly supportive part-leather front Recaro sports seats, plus an ST leather-trimmed steering wheel and gear knob.

Ford Fiesta ST200Looks matter, but so does the sound a car makes, and here Ford has nailed it again. Not many hot superminis growl like this little beauty… and who cares if it is digitally enhanced?

Driving the ST200 puts a smile on your face too because it not only feels fast, the traction is phenomenal for a car sending so much power through its front wheels.

With precise steering and go-kart like handling, the ST200 is one of the most dynamic small cars you’ll ever drive, and unlike some hot hatches, the ride suspension is set up for comfort and performance, so it won’t shake out your fillings.

Ford Fiesta ST200Of course, no car is perfect and there’s one glaring issue with the ST200 and that’s the dated centre console which features a forest of buttons and a tiny 4-inch screen that’s a stretch to reach. Small though it is, the infotainment is perfectly functional after a while. Also, rear seat space is limited thanks to the sports seats up front.

Ultimately, its strengths cancel out those gripes many times over and all is forgiven. In fact, in years to come, the ST200 will be one of the most collectible Fords.

Verdict: Fun and fabulous to look at, the pocket rocket that is the ST200 is the perfect swansong for the Mk6 Fiesta.

Fiat has had a roadster-sized hole in its range since 2005 when the last Barchetta rolled off the production line.

Strange when you consider the Italian company’s rich sports cars heritage. After all, the original 124 Sport Spider (produced between 1966 and 1982) has iconic status.

The new 124 Spider pays homage to its ancestor in styling terms, but underneath its skin, red-blooded Fiat DNA is in shorter supply. The car is essentially a Mazda MX-5 with a new body, Fiat engine and a few engineering tweaks. But let’s be clear, we don’t mean that in a dismissive way.

Classic Fiat 124 Sport Spider and the new Fiat 124 Spider

If you’re going to indulge in a little badge-engineering, then you might as well hook up with the best – and the MX-5 has been the world’s most popular sports car since its launch in 1990.

Based on the fourth-generation MX-5, launched in 2016 and the first car to win the double of both the World Car of the Year and World Car Design awards, Fiat has worked its magic and conjured up a car which not only looks different, but has its own personality too.

In fact, some say the 124 Spider is a better car than the MX-5, which is more distinctive, and divisive, in its latest form.

While the slippery MX-5 is all feline curves, the 124 Spider takes its inspiration from the 1996 original.

Slightly longer than its Japanese cousin, the Spider has a more elegant profile – the bonnet seems longer, boasts twin power domes and there’s a hexagonal-shaped grille which echoes the historic model. To the rear, there are swallow tail wings capped by a spoiler and twin exhausts. In short, Fiat’s retro look is pretty.

Inside, the Spider looks very similar to the MX-5, though opting for the tobacco leather upholstery really sets it apart. It should also be noted that the Fiat’s seats are particularly comfortable.

The cabin is just as cosy, while the instruments are very Mazda, which is no bad thing. For instance, the Fiat has inherited Mazda’s slick 7-inch touchscreen (an option on the entry level Spider), which also benefits from the addition of a rotary controller beside the handbrake between the front seats, so there’s no need to continually reach for the screen.

The Fiat 124 Spider range starts at £19,545 for the Classica trim level, rising to £22,295 for the Lusso and £23,295 for the top spec Lusso Plus. For comparison, the MX-5 is priced from £18,495 to £23,695.

Standard equipment on the entry-level Classica version includes four airbags, air conditioning, a leather-trimmed steering wheel with audio controls, a leather-trimmed gear knob, cruise control with speed limiter, 16-inch alloy wheels, keyless engine start and a powerful infotainment system with USB, AUX and Bluetooth connectivity. A 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with DAB, WiFi, two USB ports and a multimedia control knob is available as a £500 option.

The mid-range Lusso is equipped with that 7-inch infotainment system as standard, but adds satellite navigation with 3D maps and the Parkview rear parking camera as well. It is also equipped with 17-inch alloy wheels, heated leather upholstery, automatic climate control, front fog lamps, keyless entry, chrome exhaust tips and a premium silver finish on the windscreen frame and rollover bars.

The range-topping Lusso Plus model builds on the specification of the Lusso model by adding adaptive LED lights, automatic headlamps and wipers, plus a nine-speaker BOSE sound system (including stereo headrest speakers on both seats).

Fiat 124 Spider

Apart from the elegant bodywork, the other big difference is under the bonnet where Fiat offers just one engine – its familiar 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol MultiAir unit.

The MX-5 is available with 131bhp 1.5-litre and 160bhp 2.0-litre naturally aspirated engines, but arguably the Fiat unit is the best all-rounder. At 138bhp, it’s a gutsy engine that can hit 62mph from standstill in just 7.5 seconds, top out at 134mph, return 44.1mpg and emit 148g/km of CO2.

The Mazda units are good for 0-62mph times of 8.3s and 7.3s respectively, though the smaller of the two is the one to go for. It has ample power, is capable of up to 47.1mpg and has CO2 emissions of 139g/km.

Of course, a hot version of the Fiat is available in the form of the Abarth 124 Spider, which uses a 170bhp tuned version of Fiat’s 1.4 engine, allowing it to reach 62mph in 6.8 seconds.

Despite the fact that the Fiat 124 Spider weighs more than the MX-5, it feels faster, especially lower in the rev range when the turbocharger kicks in. The Spider sounds like a sports car too. Job done. What’s more, the six-speed gearbox is slick and a joy to use, but then it would be because it’s Mazda derived.

The Spider’s steering has apparently been tweaked to give it a more responsive “Italian feel”, while the suspension has been tuned too. We’d say the steering is nicely weighted, while the handling is a good compromise between comfort and speed.

Fiat 124 SpiderAficionados may claim otherwise, but to us, the Spider seems to have a slightly softer ride. However, it still feels planted and will definitely put a smile on your face when you’re tackling fast flowing roads.

Elsewhere, the familiar hood mechanism is the same as the Mazda’s and it can still be operated (without too much of a contortion) from the driver’s seat, while boot space is still tight at 140 litres, despite offering 10 litres more than the trim MX-5.

Finally, the Fiat is available in eight colours which are generally more vibrant than the MX-5’s, which may swing it for some prospective buyers. Obviously it looks great in Passione Red, but Magnetic Blue and Italian Blue are lovely too, while Urban White (in a tri-coat pearlescent finish) is surprisingly effective.

Verdict: Fiat has pulled off the impossible with the 124 Spider, creating a distinctive, stylish and fun sports car with plenty of character.
