Ayrton Senna remembered – 23 years on

The infamous 1994 San Marino Grand Prix at Imola, Italy, was one of Formula One’s darkest weekends.

On Friday, April 29, young Brazilian Rubens Barrichello crashed his Jordan so heavily and comprehensively it was a miracle that he escaped with just a broken nose.

The following day, during qualifying, 31-year-old Austrian driver Roland Ratzenberger was killed after losing control of his Simtek in the fast run up to the Tosa hairpin.

Then on Sunday, May 1, the legendary Ayrton Senna died after his Williams flew off the track and hit a concrete wall.

Donington, European GP, 1993. Senna passes four drivers to take the lead during the first lap PHOTO ERCOLE COLOMBOSince 1994 many books have been written about that weekend and the iconic Brazillian. The latest is Ayrton Senna, The Last Night, published by Skira.

Light on words, heavy on imagery, the book looks back at the career and private life of the three-times F1 champion in 100 photographs.

Photographer Ercole Colombo and writer Giorgio Terruzzi reveal Senna’s genius, beliefs and contradictions via a unique set of pictures.

Whether it’s behind-the-scenes shots of Senna with his family, friends and rivals, or stunning images of his brilliance on track, the book is both poignant and a celebration.

Silverstone, British GP, 1993. Ayrton Senna with Adriane Galisteu PHOTO ERCOLE COLOMBOFinishing with a series of photographs taken during that fateful weekend at Imola, it’s clear to see that Senna was visibly shaken and had a sense of foreboding about the race itself.

There’s an anguished shot of Senna with his close friend and F1 doctor, Professor Sid Watkins, who tried to persuade the icon to quit and go fishing with him.

Perhaps the image that best encapsulates the tragedy is one without Senna at all – just a plain shot of the gashed concrete at the Tamburello Curve where his Williams hit at 190mph.

At £34.95, Ayrton Senna, The Last Night, is a coffee table book for hardcore fans of Formula One and the icon himself.

Most experienced motorists ‘would fail’ driving test

Six in 10 British adults wouldn’t pass their driving test if they had to take it again, according to new research.

A study by Accident Advice Helpline of 2,025 motorists, who drive at least once a week, revealed that most are convinced they would fail their practical test if they had to re-take now.

And 52 per cent reckon their failure would be down to the bad driving habits they have developed while on the road.

Just under half of those polled believe modern tests would be totally different to the ones they passed, while a third are sure it was easier to pass a test years ago.

Three in 10 people claim to feel more pressure while driving now than when they first started.

“It is worrying that more people don’t feel confident in their own skills on the road and feel that they’ve developed bad habits which would cause them to not pass their driving test,” said David Carter of Accident Advice Helpline.

“Too many people are injured on the roads due to poor judgement and a lack of road skills so people should keep the good habits they learnt while taking their lessons.”

Tougher test

The study found two thirds of drivers don’t think they’d pass a theory test today unless they revised hard for it.

Of those who took a theory test originally – since its introduction in 1996 – only two in 10 can remember everything they were asked, while 46 per cent don’t remember anything at all.

Only a third of drivers can still remember everything they had to do in their practical test.

When it comes to the bad habits developed since driving – 68 per cent admit they rarely drive with both hands on the wheel at all time.

Just under half of those polled don’t put on the handbrake every time the car comes to a stop, and 25 per cent don’t look in every mirror thoroughly when pulling away.

Fifteen per cent of motorists even admit they don’t always look at the road signs.

As a direct consequence of these bad habits, one in 10 drivers admit to having become involved in an accident while on the roads.

Researchers found it takes the average person nine and a half months of lessons before they pass their test at the age of 21.

Only two in 10 people took longer than 11 months to pass their driving test, with a large gap between lessons and nerves being cited as the most popular reasons for taking longer to pass.

UK’s most expensive garages revealed

New research has exposed a huge gulf in the rates charged by mechanics throughout the UK, ranging from £36 to £234 per hour.

Overall, the average rate – combining main dealers, independent workshops and fast-fit outlets – is £67 an hour.

According to a nationwide study of 6,000 garages by automotive service and repair start-up, motoreasy, Surrey is the most expensive place to have work done to your car, with an average hourly rate of just over £81.

At the other end of the scale, Selkirkshire in Scotland has the cheapest average at £49.69.

The highest individual hourly labour rate of £234 an hour was found at a prestige sportscar manufacturer’s dealership in Reading. The cheapest, offered by an independent workshop in Manchester, was just £36.

Top 10 most expensive labour rates by region

Region Average hourly labour rate
Surrey £81.07
London £77.42
Worcestershire £77.16
Berkshire £76.77
Buckinghamshire £76.65
Middlesex £75.86
Hertfordshire £75.40
Kent £74.81
East Sussex £72.72
Bedfordshire £72.35

Top  10 cheapest labour rates by region

Region Average hourly labour rate
Selkirkshire £49.69
Shetland £53.25
Inverness £55.81
Caithness £56.10
Outer Hebrides £56.10
Gwent £56.19
North Humberside £56.27
County Durham £56.99
Renfrewshire £57.00
Powys £58.20

Franchised workshops are generally more expensive, with an average UK labour rate of £99 compared with an independent garage average of £56, a difference of more than 40%.

Despite the ever-increasing cost of service, maintenance and repair work in garages, motoreasy found that more than three quarters of motorists (77%) admit they have no idea how much they pay for an hour of labour.

More than three in five (62%) say they don’t shop around to get the best price before agreeing to work and, alarmingly, nearly a third (31%) don’t even check the final bill before paying.

Female motorists are worse than men for not checking what labour rate they are paying, with more than four in five women admitting they don’t know the hourly cost at their regular garage.

“Today’s drivers don’t have the time or, in many cases, the knowledge to make absolutely sure they are getting the best price from garages,” said motoreasy founder Duncan McClure Fisher.

“It’s not made any easier by the fact that the cost of labour differs so vastly across the UK. Even so, anyone spending money should at least understand how much they are paying and for what.”

motoreasy was launched in 2016 as a concierge-style service for motorists. Every customer gets their own personal, professional mechanic who will negotiate all costs, including labour, to ensure that motorists are not paying over the odds, or for unnecessary work. By operating a national network of approved garages, motoreasy claims it is able to pass on trade saving to customers.

Mazda MX-5 RF review

If you want to experience the exhilaration of driving with the wind in your hair, yet you’re not prepared to buy a hardcore convertible, then the new Mazda MX-5 RF could be for you.

The RF, which stands for Retractable Fastback, broadens the appeal of the world’s best-selling roadster by offering an electrically-operated targa-style top.

Mazda MX-5 RFDispensing with the fabric roof of the convertible and aimed at offering a little extra refinement – especially at motorway speeds – Mazda has also arguably managed to make the coupe-like RF even more attractive than the soft-top MX-5.

I say “arguably” because not everyone is so sure about the RF’s looks. For me, the fastback look works so much better than the previous generation’s hardtop and adds a new level of sophistication to the MX-5.

Mazda MX-5 RFThe hardtop used to fold flat into the space between the boot and the back seat. With the RF, the rear part of the roof is more of a fixture, sloping down towards the boot with distinctive buttresses. However, when you want to open up the cabin it raises up to swallow the front parts of the roof mechanism.

The impressively slick origami-style mechanism is operated at the touch of a button (at speeds of up to 6mph) and the operation is all over within 15 seconds – the same for the operation in reverse.

Mazda MX-5 RFAnd here’s the thing. Unlike many convertibles where luggage space is comprised, the boot in the RF has an almost identical luggage capacity, just shy of 130 litres. Ok, we’re still talking two pieces of hand luggage and a few small soft bags, but it’s really not bad for such a compact car.

Elsewhere, the differences are minor. It’s only 5mm taller than the convertible and thanks to a clever use of lightweight roof materials, it weighs just 45kg more.

Mazda MX-5 RFI tested the RF with both available SKYACTIV-G petrol engines – the 131PS 1.5-litre and 160PS 2.0-litre, both paired up with Mazda’s slick and sporty six-speed manual gearbox (though the bigger engine will also be available with an automatic gearbox).

Naturally, the 2.0-litre just edges out the 1.5-litre when it comes to performance and it sounds more aggressive, reaching 62mph from standstill in 7.4 seconds, compared to 8.6, and a top speed of 134mph, as opposed to 126mph.

But frankly there isn’t much between the two and the smaller unit is more than adequate for all but the keenest drivers. I’d also plump for the 1.5-litre because it can return up to 46.3pmg – nearly 6mpg more on paper than the larger engine, but I suspect the gap is bigger in real-world driving if my test drives were anything to go by.

Mazda MX-5 RFThe RF is quieter than the convertible and definitely has more of a coupe feel with the top up, though with the roof open at higher speeds there’s still a fair amount of wind noise. That said, buffeting is minimal.

Behind the wheel, the RF is just like the regular MX-5 – a rare car that instantly feels right. The winning formula hasn’t been changed – it still has a front engine, rear-wheel drive layout, it’s nimble, handles beautifully and is competitively priced.

Mazda MX-5 RFThe cosy cabin is modern and packed with everything you’d expect, including a 7-inch colour display with (thankfully) a rotary control on the centre console, an excellent sound system with DAB and full connectivity, cruise control and LED daytime running lights.

However, just like the convertible, rearward visibility with the roof up can still be challenging.

Priced from £22,295, it’s a few thousand more than the entry-level convertible, but overall it’s a star car that’s rewarding to drive and surprisingly practical.

Verdict: The new RF is a superb addition to the award-winning MX-5 range – as close to a perfect sports car as you can get, and now with added refinement.

Hyundai expedition celebrates Shackleton centenary

A near-standard 2.2-litre diesel Hyundai Santa Fe has become the first passenger vehicle to be driven across the continent of Antarctica from Union Camp to McMurdo and back again.

The SUV was driven by Patrick Bergel, the great-grandson of legendary polar explorer, Sir Ernest Shackleton.

Hyundai Santa Fe conquers the Antarctic driven by Great Grandson of Sir Ernest ShackletonThe journey was timed to commemorate the centenary of Shackleton’s heroic Trans-Antarctic expedition and has been made into a short film by Hyundai.

The expedition saw Patrick and a small team take on almost 5,800km of icy terrain in bitter conditions – finishing the journey Shackleton never completed.

They not only had to cover extreme distances at temperatures down to minus 28-degrees Celsius, but also had to plot new paths on floating ice caps that have never been travelled by wheeled vehicle before.

Bergel, a technology entrepreneur, admitted: “I’m not a polar explorer; I’m an indoor guy. So it was a big cultural shift – and it was quite something to have been the first to do this.”

The team travelled from Union Glacier to the South Pole then followed the Leverett Glacier and the Trans-Antarctic Mountains, past smoking Mount Erebus volcano, to the Ross Ice Shelf and McMurdo.

“Some sections were unbelievably beautiful and only a few dozen people actually get to see the Trans-Antarctic Mountains. That was the point at which nobody in a wheeled vehicle had been beyond,” Bergel added.

“My great-grandfather was the first to climb Erebus and I’d seen pictures of it as a child. It is quite spectacular, with plumes of smoke coming out, and it was pretty special to be driving and see it come out of the cloud.”

Aston Martin Vanquish S Red Arrows Edition

Limited edition collection of 10 Aston Martin Vanquish S models created in tribute to the The Red Arrows.

Aston Martin Cambridge has commissioned the cars, which have been designed to emulate the experience of piloting a Hawk jet – the Royal Air Force’s aerobatic team’s aircraft of choice.

Approved by the Ministry of Defence and the Royal Air Force, these are some of the most exclusive Aston Martin cars ever built, with custom details throughout highlighting the prestigious partnership.

Q by Aston Martin’s personalisation service has worked alongside Aston Martin Cambridge to create the exclusive Vanquish S Red Arrows Edition.

The car has been painted in a special Eclat red pearlescent colour, which is not only the Red Arrows signature, but is a unique custom shade of red containing gold flakes.

In true Red Arrows fashion, the car has been finished with white ‘flash’ side strake edges leading into the doors, trademark Red Arrows blue and white ‘smoke trails’ on the side skirts into the rear diffuser and exhaust, unique Red Arrows Union Jack tail fin motif and individual engine plaque with Red Arrows logo signed by a team member.

Each car is completely unique and designed after one particular Red Arrows jet with custom details including a formation number throughout the car.

Internally, the Vanquish S Red Arrows Edition boasts specially designed features including ‘Diamond Nine’ embroidery on headrests; obsidian black with olive green inserts matching Martin Baker ejection seat fabric colours in the Red Arrows Hawk, audio on/off system switch made from recycled Red Arrows Hawks parts; Hawk serial number embroidery on passenger airbag matching aircraft; plus the Red Arrows squadron crest lacquered into the screen veneer in a monochrome finish.

Completing the aviation theme, the Vanquish S Red Arrows Edition comes with a range of accessories including two custom Red Arrows inspired racing suits – one in red, for the driver to mirror the pilot, and one in blue for the passenger as a nod to the engineers who fly in the back seat of the Hawks on transit flights. There are also two custom Red Arrows racing helmets, two Red Arrows Team leather jackets commissioned and worn by the team, themed car cover, embossed owner’s manual and and a leather photo album featuring high quality images taken on the handover day for each customer.

Red 10, the tenth car built in this series, will be donated to the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund. This one-of-a-kind car will be raffled off to the public with full proceeds from the raffle going directly to the charity.

Seat Ateca review

SEAT may have been a little late to the party when it comes to having an SUV in the range, but the good news is that it’s been worth the wait.

The Ateca isn’t just a bit of rugged eye candy, it’s a very capable crossover – and it has to be because it’s up against the likes of its VW Group cousin, the Tiguan, plus the Kia Sportage, Nissan Qashqai, Hyundai Tucson, Renault Kadjar and Ford Kuga. The list is endless and they’re all impressive in their own ways.

Priced from £18,150 for the entry-level S, powered by a surprisingly effective 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, to £30,595 for the flagship XCELLENCE 4Drive I tested, packing a 190PS 2.0 turbo diesel and all-wheel drive. A lot of money for a SEAT you might think, but it’s a lot of car.

Seat AtecaOther engine choices include a 1.4-litre petrol, 1.6-litre diesel and a lower-powered 2.0-litre diesel.

You can see from the pictures that the Ateca is a looker (especially in Samoa Orange). Just like other SEATs, it’s sharp and stylish. You may also get a sense of the space inside and the quality feel.

The interior oozes SEAT DNA too. Driver focused up front, the dials and centre console are well laid out and clear, the seats are comfortable, and of course there’s that raised driving position. It’s also possible to match the interior lighting to your mood with ambient LEDs.

Seat AtecaThere’s plenty of space in the back for three passengers, plus 510 litres of luggage capacity and up to 1,604 litres with the rear seats folded (485 litres and 1,579 litres for 4Drive versions).

My test car was equipped with classy leather seats and plenty of extras including the £915 Navigation System Plus which features an 8-inch touchscreen (the cheapest Ateca has to make do with a 5-incher), plus the £1,210 XCELLENCE Pack which includes gizmos like a top-view camera and electric tailgate.

Its powerful diesel engine is paired with a slick 7-speed DSG auto gearbox which helps power this big car to 62mph in an effortless 7.5 seconds (though it seems brisker) and on to a top speed of 132mph.

Seat AtecaIt’s economical too. On paper, it can manage up to 53.3mpg with CO2 emissions of 135g/km. Real-world fuel economy is closer to a decent 40-45mpg, if my experience is anything to go buy.

Like most diesels, it’s a little gruff initially, especially under hard acceleration, but it soon settles down and is a refined cruiser with no shortage of grunt.

What makes this car so special is the way it delivers that power and handles. The ride may be a little firm over some surfaces for some, but the traction is fantastic and it feels planted, while body roll is minimal – remarkable for a car of this height.

Seat AtecaWith SEAT Drive Profile, you can also tailor the steering, throttle response and gearshifts (in automatic cars) with Normal, Comfort, Sport, Eco and Individual modes. And, of course, the all-wheel drive XCELLENCE gets Offroad and Snow modes too.

Clearly the Ateca is no Land Rover, but it does have some all-terrain ability, so if you live in an area where you need a little more peace of mind when the going gets tough, then maybe the 4Drive is for you.

Seat AtecaEven if you never use the off-road settings, the Ateca XCELLENCE 4Motion is a fine drive, whether you’re cruising or tackling more challenging roads in a spirited fashion.

Needless to say the Ateca can be loaded with as much tech and driver assistance aids as you like. My car even came with a Connectivity Box under the centre console, which includes a wireless phone charger, two USB ports and a mobile phone signal booster via the car’s on-board antenna. It’s fully compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, while MirrorLink enables you to control your phone from the main touchscreen.

You can also download the SEAT ConnectApp, which allows the Ateca to read out text messages, e-mails and social media updates, and you can dictate responses – all via MirrorLink.

Seat AtecaFinally, the Ateca was awarded a maximum five stars in Euro NCAP crash testing.

Verdict: The SEAT Ateca XCELLENCE 4Drive is an impressive, classy package. Spacious, stylish, safe and versatile, you’d be hard part to find an SUV with such an entertaining drive for £30,000.

Volvo celebrates its 90th birthday

Volvo Cars starts production of its new XC60 mid-size SUV in Gothenburg, Sweden, this month – 90 years after the first-ever Volvo, the ÖV4, saw the light of day on April 14, 1927.

New Volvo XC60A A total of just 275 vehicles were sold in its lifetime, which was modest even in those days, while the new XC60 replaces one of the best-selling models in Volvo’s history.

The original XC60 became a phenomenon, with climbing sales every year since it was introduced in 2008.

Seven years after it was revealed, it became the bestselling premium mid-sized SUV in Europe, and in its ninth year it is still selling in big numbers, accounting for around 30% of Volvo’s total global sales. In fact, April 2017 will see XC60 production exceed 1,000,000.

Original Volvo XC60Volvo’s founder, Assar Gabrielsson, saw an opportunity for car manufacturing in Sweden after observing the growing automotive industries in the US and Europe from his position within sales at the Swedish ball bearing maker SKF – a supplier to the car industry.

He managed to convince SKF to invest in a spin-off car business called AB Volvo and the first mass-produced Swedish car was quite a conventional vehicle, with elements of American car design, a wooden frame made of ash tree and beech, a 1.9-litre side-valve engine and artillery wheels with wooden spokes.

Only one colour combination was available – dark blue with black fenders.

Despite all these changes over the past 90 years, one thing has remained the same and that’s Volvo’s commitment to making the world’s safest cars.

Ellie Goulding drives new Range Rover Velar

The new Range Rover Velar has made its showstopping US debut with an exclusive online performance from singer-songwriter Ellie Goulding.

The star’s New York show brought a touch of British glamour to the Velar’s launch party. Earlier, she became the first person to drive the new Velar in Manhattan.

“I have always been a big Range Rover fan and it was a pleasure to be a part of its launch here in the US,” said Ellie. “Even more rewarding to be supporting a local charity that improves over 10,000 lives every year in one of my favourite cities.”

The Velar will go on sale this summer and plug the gap between the Range Rover Evoque and the Range Rover Sport.

Life in the slow lane

The M25 was the UK’s slowest motorway in 2016, with speeds averaging just 25mph, according to new research.

SATRAK Vehicle Tracking analysed data from 527,000 vehicles and found that the M4 was only slightly quicker with 30mph average speeds.

Cambridge was surprisingly the slowest city in the UK with vehicles averaging 13mph, closely followed by Hereford and London.

“It’s little surprise to find that the M25 is in fact the slowest motorway,” said Dan Walton of SATRAK Vehicle Tracking.

“I’ve heard of tailbacks stretching 12 miles in my time there so it’s of little surprise to me. It’s nice to see that people are taking care in many of our cities however, as these places are often busy and above all are not environments for speeding.”

Nissan Micra review

Rarely has a car changed from one generation to the next as the new Nissan Micra.

Once an ugly duckling so beloved of driving schools and people of a certain age, the fifth-generation is now the coolest new kid on the block.

Fresh and modern, the striking new supermini features Nissan’s signature V-motion grille, sharply sculpted lines, rear door handles hidden in the C-pillars, an extended roofline incorporating a spoiler, a “floating roof” and boomerang-shaped rear lights.

Nissan MicraLonger, wider and lower than before, the well proportioned new Micra is so slippery it boasts a “best-in-class” drag coefficient of just 0.29.

It’s also on trend when it comes to personalisation with a choice of 10 basic colours, including fabulous Energy Orange, which combined with the various other options means that there are more than 100 combinations available.

It’s much the same story inside where it’s been stylishly designed with a wide use of quality plastics, decent fabrics and more customisation options. There’s a definite feeling of space and light up front, while the instrument cluster is clear and features a mini colour digital info screen sandwiched between two big dials. Obviously it’s also fully connected with a built-in 7-inch infotainment touchscreen (Acenta grade upwards) dominating the centre console.

Nissan MicraThe seats are comfortable and there’s plenty of adjustment, as there is with the steering. It’s a little tighter in the back, but there’s just enough rooms for adults, though taller passengers will struggle for head and leg space.

There are plenty of places to store smaller items in the cabin too, while the boot capacity is a competitive 300 litres, expanding to 1,004 litres with the 60:40 split rear seats folded down.

The top-of-the-range Tekna also features an optional “first-of-its-kind” Bose personal sound system with special speakers built into the driver’s seat headrest for an “immersive listening experience”. Nice gimmick, though the difference isn’t quite as dramatic as one might think.

Nissan MicraAvailable only as a five-door, the new Micra is available in five trim levels – Visia, Visia+, Acenta, N-Connecta and Tekna – and it’s priced from £13,915 to £17,435.

Initially available with two 89bhp engines – a 0.9-litre three-cylinder turbo petrol and 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel – an entry-level 72bhp three-cylinder 1.0-litre petrol (non turbo) will follow later in 2017.

I tested versions with the two engines available now in various trim levels. For the record, Nissan expects the 0.9-litre petrol in Acenta grade to be the most popular model.

Nissan Micra

The first thing you notice about driving the new Micra is that it’s impressively refined. Push it hard and the three-pot petrol thrums and it gets a little out of breath, but keep it smooth and it’s a good little unit. Definitely room there for a hot Nismo version at some stage in the future.

As you’d expect, the diesel has more torque and is much more relaxed at speed, so it’s probably the better choice if you spend most of your time cruising on motorways. On paper both are pretty economical.

The 0.9-litre petrol can reach 62mph from standstill in 12.1sec, a top speed of 109mph, and it’s capable of up to 58.9mpg, emitting a low 99g/km CO2.

Nissan Micra 5The 1.5-litre diesel is slightly faster to 62mph (11.9sec), can hit 111mph, but can return up to 88.3mpg with CO2 emissions of just 85g/km.

The engines are paired to a five-speed manual gearbox, which isn’t the slickest and seems like it’s a gear short at times, such is the trend towards six-speeders these days.

The stand-out observation for the new Micra is that it handles really impressively with barely any body lean when tackling corners at higher speeds and good grip.

Nissan MicraIt uses Nissan’s Intelligent Trace Control system which kicks in when cornering, automatically engaging and adjusting the brakes on the inside of the vehicle, and the wheels on the outside. The ride is nicely settled too.

And full marks to Nissan too for equipping the new Micra with a shed-load of safety and driver assistance tech as standard. Every car comes with land departure warning, automatic emergency braking, traffic sign recognition and high beam assist.

Other electronic safety systems include Electronic Stability Program, anti-lock brakes, hill start assist, a speed limiter, automatic headlight sensor, automatic hazard lights and a tyre pressure monitoring system.

Nissan MicraThe options list is also impressive for a supermini, including the “class-exclusive” Intelligent AVM (Around-View Monitor) which gives you a virtual bird’s eye view of your car and its surroundings to make parking a doddle.

The Nissan Micra has to be good because it’s up against strong opposition including the existing and upcoming new Ford Fiesta, Kia Rio, Suzuki Baleno, Citroen C3, Volkswagen Polo and Skoda Fabia.

Verdict: Distinctively stylish, well built, safe, packed with goodies and entertaining to drive, the Nissan Micra is a serious contender.

Up until now David Brown Automotive has been best known for its £500,000 Speedback GT – a sixties-styled sports car, based on the running gear of a Jaguar XKR with more than a hint of Aston Martin DB5.

Mini Remastered uses a range of luxurious materials and finishes to create the ultimate classic Mini.

Mini Remastered by David Brown AutomotiveEach car is built by hand from the ground up using brand new body panels which David Brown Automotive refines in-house to create smooth and accurate surfaces with perfect shut lines.

The exterior shape has been refined, visually softened and ‘cleaned’ by de-seaming the silhouette and welding in bespoke structural beams, with additional support struts added for rigidity. Each car also undergoes a laborious sound-proofing process to ensure passenger comfort in the cabin.

Modern touches carried over from Speedback GT include custom-built aluminium grilles and a full LED exterior rear light cluster with jewel-like details and bezels.

Mini Remastered by David Brown AutomotiveEach car also features handcrafted enamel David Brown Automotive badges and modern detail touches such as puddle lights fitted to each classic bullet-style wing mirror.

The interior offers bespoke sculpted seat, plus a combination of paint, leather and fabric finishes to the dash. Premium retro Smiths dials, a David Brown Automotive engraved Moto-Lita steering wheel with enhanced driving position, and the addition of a cup holder to the centre console make Mini Remastered one of the most
luxurious classic cars ever re-imagined.

Each Mini Remastered will be supplied with a 1275cc or 1310cc engine reconditioned and with power boosted by up to 50%, plus there’s a fully refurbished four-speed gearbox, upgraded suspension and brakes.

Every car will go through a four-week painting process for the ultimate finish and customers can choose their own colours. It’s thought that the cars will be priced from £50,000-£70,000.

Mini Remastered by David Brown Automotive will be launched to the public at the upcoming Top Marques Monaco show, taking place from April 20-23 in the Grimaldi Forum, Monte Carlo.

Meet the fastest hearse in the west

Extreme engineer reveals plan to drive at more than 200mph in a jet-powered hease.

Matt McKeown, 56, already holds the title for the world’s fastest shopping trolley after he attached a jet engine and hit 70mph.

Now the extreme engineer is taking speed to a new level in his 1992 Ford Granada hearse which he bought online for £1,200.

Fastest hearse in the westMatt owns a pair of 1950s jet engines and has spent the past 18 months shoehorning one of them into the back of a black hearse.

The jet turbine has around 1,750 lb of thrust and Matt is hoping to drive at more than 200mph later this summer.

He has now unveiled the one-off motor, dubbed ‘Dead Quick’, ahead of its official debut at the Prescott Bike Festival in Gloucestershire on April 9 where petrolheads will be raising money for the charity Blood Bikes.

“My hobby is extreme engineering where I take something which is inherently mundane like the shopping trolley or the hearse and stick a jet engine in it,” explained Matt, who runs Plymouth Karting in Devon.

“I get the idea in my head and I have to act straight away so I went online and bought the Granada hearse for around £1,200.

“The turbine is a Rolls-Royce viper turbine, sourced from a 1950s Provost jet used by the RAF. “We’ve been working on it on-and-off for around 18 months now, we must have put 300 hours into it.”

Despite having a jet turbine in the back, Matt’s hearse – which has cost him about £10,000 so far – is road legal and uses a 2.9-litre Ford engine.

Matt added: “I have created several odd vehicles now but I view them more as art than motorsport. This certainly raises some eyebrows when it has been driven on the road.”

The current top speed for a hearse, according to Guinness World Records, is 115.6mph, set in 2010 by Shane Hammond.

The Australian hit the speed in his hearse, ‘Undead’, on the TDRA Dragway in Tasmania, Australia, on 20 February 2010.

‘The Range Rover Story’ tour

A new interactive visitor attraction celebrating 50 years of the legendary Range Rover has opened at Land Rover’s Solihull manufacturing plant in the West Midlands.

‘The Range Rover Story’ tour features the 1967 Velar prototype chassis and full-size prototype clay replica.

Range Rover VelarRange Rover has been manufactured at Solihull since 1970, but its history with the site goes back to 1967 when the first secret prototype was conceived, codenamed Velar.

The new exhibit will take visitors on a time-travelling voyage from its inception, through to the introduction of the Range Rover Sport and Range Rover Evoque and culminating in the newly-announced Range Rover Velar.

Last year, Jaguar Land Rover sold 583,313 cars (more than one every minute) – 44% of which were Range Rovers.

The Range Rover family now contributes £10bn annually to the UK economy and is Britain’s largest luxury export.

Maserati stages ‘car vs horse’ race

Maserati devised a unique ‘car vs horse’ challenge to explore the capabilities of the luxury marque’s first ever SUV, the Levante.

In the run-up to the world famous Grand National, National Hunt trainer, Dan Skelton, drove a new Levante Diesel in a race against professional jockey brother, Harry, on horseback.

The Point-to-Point challenge took place in the grounds of Chavenage House Estate in the Cotswolds.

Following the rules of historical point-to-point racing, Dan and Harry were tasked with travelling between two set points as fast as possible.

The nature of the race and the course allowed the Levante to showcase its off-road capabilities and intelligent Q4 All-Wheel-Drive system, having to navigate through rough terrain that was unsuitable for horseback.

With both competitors taking different routes to the finish line, the power and speed of the Levante eventually told, with Dan just overtaking Harry and Dinnie O on the final straight.

“Racing my brother through the British countryside in the new Maserati Levante was fantastic fun and of course the best man won!” said Dan.

Harry admitted: “We’ve always been ultra-competitive and of course I never like losing to my brother.

“The challenge was something very different to my usual day job, and I’m hoping Dan will lend me the keys to his Levante soon so I can get behind the wheel for a test drive.”

The Levante, complete with 3.0 litre V6 Turbo Diesel engine, starts from £56,250.

Land Rover Discovery review

Replacing the much-loved Land Rover Discovery 4 was never going to be an easy task.

The fact that the new Disco isn’t just as good, but even better, speaks volumes for the rude health and ambition of Land Rover today.

Putting the elephant in the room to one side (the new car’s backside), the Disco 5 is lighter, more agile on the road, even more capable off-road and more luxurious inside

Yet it can still tow up to 3,500kg, it can be surprisingly economical and it’s now a genuine seven-seater. Yes, that’s right, seven adults can now undertake a journey in this superb SUV.

Land Rover DiscoveryTo please Discovery devotees, the new car features various styling cues from the outgoing model. The Disco 4’s boxy looks have been replaced by curves and a front end more reminiscent of its little brother, the Discovery Sport

It’s still tall and the roofline gently rises to the rear again in order to accommodate stadium-style seating, while the signature clamshell bonnet is there too, along with reverse C-pillars.

The Disco 5’s slabby rear end may well be divisive, but remember, that awkward off-set number plate also featured on the old car. The fifth-gen Discovery also gets a top-hinged single tailgate, losing the popular two-piece, but there is still a ledge to sit on for picnics and changing your wellies.

The new Discovery is 4970mm long, 2220mm wide (including the mirrors) and 1846mm tall, meaning it’s slightly longer, narrower and lower than the vehicle it replaces.

Land Rover DiscoveryCrucially, the wheelbase is a fraction longer, which boosts passenger space, while liberal use of aluminium means the whole cars weighs up to 480kg less than the Disco 4, depending on which engine you opt for.

Inside, the Discovery has moved upmarket and it’s definitely plusher than its more utilitarian early days 28 years and 1.2 million-plus vehicles ago.

Priced from £43,995 to £65,695, there are four main specs  – S, SE, HSE and HSE Luxury – and even the entry-level model gets heated door mirrors, autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning, air conditioning and the latest 8-inch touchscreen InControl infotainment system.

Upgrading to SE adds leather upholstery, sat nav, LED headlights, electrically adjustable and heated front seats and dual-zone climate control. While HSE models gain a panoramic roof, a reversing camera, heated rear seats and a 10-inch touchscreen.

Land Rover DiscoveryPlump for the range-topping HSE Luxury and you get a rear entertainment package, a 360-degree camera system, four-zone climate control and an impressive Meridian sound system.

Naturally, there’s still a commanding driving position at the front and it definitely has a command centre feel to it.

There’s plenty of space behind too, and it’s just a case of flipping one of the outer seats in order to gain access to the third row.

The Discovery oozes stowage areas throughout the cabin and soaks up luggage with 1,137 litres of space behind the second row and up to 2,406 litres when all rear seats are folded.

Land Rover DiscoveryI’m just under six-foot and I managed to sit in the third row. However, for longer journeys the second row might have to be pushed forward slightly. Impressive, especially when you consider that seats six and seven are strictly for small people in many rivals (the Volvo XC90 and Audi Q7 to name but two).

Talking of seats, you can even control and configure them remotely with your smartphone.

There are three engines available – a four-cylinder diesel for the first time, the much-loved 254bhp V6 diesel, plus a 340bhp 3.0-litre V6 petrol.

I tried both diesels and though the V6 is smooth and powerful – and sounds glorious – the new twin-turbo 237bhp version of the Ingenium 2.0-litre diesel unit is a revelation.

Land Rover DiscoveryMore refined than in any other Jaguar or Land Rover, it pulls well and was more than adequate off-road too. Unless towing is your priority, it makes absolute sense. It’s also more economical – it’s capable of up to 43.5mpg with CO2 emissions of 171g/km, while the 3.0-litre only manages 39.2mpg with CO2 emissions of 189g/km.

Both diesels are surprisingly quick off the mark too – 7.7 seconds in the 3.0-litre and 8.0 seconds in the four-cylinder.

Of course, the supercharged V6 petrol is slick and full of beans (0-60mph in just 6.9 seconds), though fuel economy dips to 26mpg CO2 emissions shoot up to 254g/km.

All the engines are paired with the excellent eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox.

Land Rover DiscoveryThe Discovery drives better than ever too. Depending on which model you opt for, it definitely feels more agile, while the ride is seriously smooth. However, it’s tall and clearly more set up for comfort because there’s a fair amount of body lean if you push it into the corners on more challenging roads. You soon get used to it though, just like a Range Rover, while cruising is an utter joy.

But here’s the thing. The 2.0-litre seems to be more planted and it’s definitely the combination I’d go for.

To fully appreciate the Discovery, it’s worth sampling its all-terrain ability at one of Land Rover’s experience centres. With a maximum ground clearance of 283mm and 500mm of wheel articulation, it quite simply ploughs over, round and through obstacles at the most amazing angles, while water challenges are a doddle thanks to its 900mm wading ability.

Land Rover DiscoveryIt boasts all manner of Terrain Response gizmos depending on the challenges faced and progress is effortless.

One other technical development deserves a mention. If you tow regularly, you might be tempted by the clever Advanced Tow Assist which allows drivers to use the controller in the console between the front seats to reverse a trailer, caravan and horsebox with ease using guidelines overlaid in the rear-facing camera displayed on the touchscreen.

The new Land Rover Discovery is, without doubt, one of the world’s most capable cars. It looks modern, it’s supreme off-road, a comfortable cruiser on the road, plus it’s safe and luxurious. Quite simply, a legend reborn.
