What should I do if my car needs repairing?

The majority of drivers, at some stage or another, will have to deal with car damage. Whether it’s a simple case of a warning light suddenly flashing, or a full-blown breakdown on a motorway, most cars will need repairs at some point. However, what are the best ways to approach these predicaments? If you have …

Electric car’s record-breaking Nurburgring lap

NIO EP9 all-electric supercar at the NurburgringWhoosh! Watch the NIO EP9 all-electric supercar smash the Nürburgring Nordschleife lap record…

A remarkable video has been released by Chinese-backed NextEV featuring its futuristic car lap the notorious 12.9-mile “Green Hell” in six minutes, 45.900 seconds – 19.22 seconds faster than its previous lap time.

Shaving 2.1 seconds off the previous best time by a road-legal vehicle (set by the Radical SR8LM in 2009), the NIO EP9 is a full half-minute quicker than the nearest EV challenger – Toyota’s TMG EV P002.

It’s also six seconds faster than the Lamborghini Huracan Performante, which set a time of six minutes 52.01s earlier this year.

The EP9’s 1-MegaWatt of power is equivalent to 1360PS (1342 bhp) and it has a top speed of 313kph (194mph) – accelerating from 0-200kph (0-124mph) in 7.1 seconds.

Actor Michael Fassbender Races with Ferrari.Hollywood star Michael Fassbender has stepped into a real-time role as a Ferrari racing driver.

The Steve Jobs and 12 Years a Slave actor has successfully completed the first round of the 2017 North American Ferrari Challenge racing series.

A lifelong fan of Ferrari and Formula 1, 40-year-old Fassbender began his training with Ferrari’s “Corso Pilota” driving program last year.

“Ferrari is defined by racing, and training with the Ferrari team gave me a great foundation to hone my skills behind the wheel of the 488 Challenge race car,” says Fassbender.

“From a very early age I idolized Ferrari and its champion, Michael Schumacher, in particular, so now racing in the Ferrari Challenge brings that dream full circle.”

A single-model championship series developed by Ferrari for clients who have a passion for racing, the Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli has thrilled drivers and fans alike since its inception in 1992.

Subaru BRZ review

Subaru BRZ review

The Subaru BRZ is one of the best kept secrets of the auotmotive world.

Developed alongisde the near-identical Toyota GT86, it’s an affordable back-to-basics front
engined, rear-wheel drive 2+2 sports coupe.

For 2017, Subaru has given the evergreen BRZ a mid-life facelift, equipment upgrade and distilled the trim options down to just one – SE Lux.

Subaru BRZ review

The exterior design tweaks are subtle, apart from the old school aerodynamic wing at the rear. Elsewhere, there’s a new front bumper, LED headlights and 10-spoke 17-inch alloys.

You can choose from five colours, though Subaru’s iconic WR (World Rally) Blue Pearl is surely the one to go for.

Inside, a 4.2-inch LCD colour display is added to the instrument display, featuring such sporting essentials as a G-Force meter and braking gauge.

Subaru BRZ review

The leather steering wheel is now smaller and boasts audio controls, while plastics generally have been upgraded or replaced by leather, giving the cabin a more upmarket feel.

The Alcantra and leather seats are more comfortable than ever (the driver’s seat has a six-way adjustment), while a 6.2-inch touchscreen has been added to the centre console, though sat nav is a £1,250 option.

The infotainment system is not as hi-tech as the best of them, but it does the job and, of course, offers full connectivity.

Subaru BRZ review

Traditionalists will be pleased to note that the cockpit is still adorned with plenty of retro-feel knobs and toggle switches.

The rear passenger seats are fitted with ISOFIX anchor points, but as with most 2+2s, they are
almost totally useless. Better news in the boot where there’s 243 litres of space available – 1,270 with the rear seats folded flat.

The 2017 Subaru BRZ is more driver focused than ever. Sadly, there’s no extra power for the 2.0-
litre 200PS ‘Boxer’ petrol engine, but it is more responsive, it still sounds suitably throaty and CO2 emissions are slightly lower.

Subaru BRZ review

Elsewhere, Subaru’s engineers have made various changes (to the steering, suspension, dampers and
brakes) to tweak the driving dynamics and make the BRZ even sharper than before.

Priced from £26,050, the BRZ is one of the most entertaining cars you’ll find for that money.

The chassis is better than ever and it’s enormous fun on flowing country roads. Agile and engaging, it’s helped by a slick six-speed short-throw manual gearbox and it feels totally
planted.

Subaru BRZ review

For the record, the BRZ is capable of 0-62mph in 7.6 seconds (but feels faster) and it tops out at 140mph. Fuel economy is a claimed 36.2mpg (and it not far off that in the real world), while CO2 emissions are a very average 180g/km.

But here’s the thing. The BRZ is also now available with automatic transmission – and it’s a bit of a revelation.

Subaru BRZ review

It may sounds like sacrilege in a sports car package like this, but the auto box slams through the gears pretty well – even producing the odd pop on down-changes, allowing you to concentrate on the driving. The engine even sounds more sporty.

Verdict: The new, improved Subaru BRZ is better than ever. With a mild makeover inside and out, plus enhanced driving dynamics, it has to be one of the best-value, most entertaining sports cars
on the market – and it still looks just as cool.

Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT vs drag racer

Jeep’s awesome 6.4-litre V8 HEMI-engined Grand Cherokee SRT goes head-to-head with a Hot Rod
Coupe at Santa Pod.

UK drag racing champion Stuart Doignie launched the Jeep off the start line and down the
quarter-mile straight in 13.5 seconds, defeating the HEMI-engined Coupe, driven by Kelvin
Dunn, by just 0.9 seconds.

Delivering a massive 468hp and packed full of high-performance technologies including launch
control, Doignie helped the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT register an impressive 0-62mph time of 4.5
seconds.

“I was hugely impressed by the raw power and speed of the Grand Cherokee SRT,” said Doignie.

“I’ve driven plenty of dragster vehicles at Santa Pod but never a car built purely for the road.
It’s immensely quick off the line and powered through the finish gantry. It was an epically close
race with the HEMI Coupe but I was glad to keep up my great record at Santa Pod with another
win.”

Renault Twingo GT review

Renault Twingo GT review

The Renault Twingo was the city car that dared to be different when it was launched in 2014.

With its rear engine, cute looks and spacious interior, it’s been a quirky choice ever since. However, up until now, the one thing it’s lacked is Va Va Voom.

The Twingo GT is Renault’s attempt at remedying this situation, and it almost succeeds. More warm than hot, the addition of a tuned version of the 998cc three-cylinder engine gives it an extra 20bhp (up from 89 to 109).

Renault Twingo GT review

Apparently Renault Sport wasn’t able to squeeze a bigger engine beneath the rear parcel shelf, so there was no option but to extract as much power as possible from the existing unit. The only other alternative was to sacrifice the rear seats Renault 5 Turbo style, which would have dented the Twingo’s city car credentials somewhat.

The power boost may not sound much, but the GT instantly feels faster, accelerating to 62mph in 9.6 seconds and topping out at 113mph. Sounding much sportier than its regular stablemates, the turbo boost kicks in at around 2,000rpm and enthusiastic drivers will trigger the rev limiter as they spin through the gears.

That said, the GT is definitely more fun – not just in a straight line, but from a handling point of view. It feels more planted, though some may find the ride a little on the firm side.

Renault Twingo GT review

Renault Sport hasn’t just boosted the horses – the suspension, steering and gear ratios have been tweaked too, while the ride height is 20mm lower.

The Twingo GT looks different too. There’s a choice of four colours, including Lunaire Grey, Profond Black and Glacier White, but we’d go for Piment Orange combined with orange trim details in the cabin, Renault Sport-badged door sills and aluminium pedals.

Perhaps the easiest way to distinguish the GT is the air intake on the left rear wing, twin exhausts and go-faster decals.

Renault Twingo GT review

Apart from its enhanced performance and sharper handling, the GT benefits from all the advantages of the more basic car.

There’s a surprising amount of space up front and in the rear for adults – it’s also comfortable, well equipped and fully connected.

The boot shelf is a little higher than most of its competitors because the engine is slung below, but there’s still space (180 litres) for shopping or a couple of weekend cases.

Renault Twingo GT review

However, don’t go expecting any cheeky stowaway space under the bonnet, as you might traditionally expect in rear-engined cars – there’s no room there, just access to the battery, coolant and windscreen washer reservoirs.

The rear seats fold flat 50/50 and the front passenger seat folds down too for extra luggage space. The rest of the interior is nicely laid out and well put together with some funky touches, echoing the exterior.

The Twingo’s party trick is also intact – it remains one of the most manoeuvrable  city cars on the market with a remarkable turning circle of 8.59 metres.

Renault Twingo GT review

Fuel economy is good too, if you can resist the temptation to plant your right foot. It’s capable of 54mpg, while CO2 emissions are a fairly low 115g/km.

The GT is up against some strong competition – especially the VW Up!, which for is arguably the best handling car in its class and is also blessed with a gutsy three-cylinder engine.

Priced from £14,085, the Twingo GT is a big improvement on the regular car. Funky, entertaining to drive, classy and well equipped, it’s also backed by Renault’s four-year/100,000-mile warranty and four years’ roadside cover.

Top 10 family ‘car confessions’ revealed

Car confessionsParents and kids appear to bond best when they’re in the car, according to new research.

British parents are quite literally ‘going round the houses’ when it comes to discussing serious
issues with their children – by using the family car as a travelling ‘confessional’.

The study, for Renault Scénic, shows 54 more per cent of kids are more likely to open up about
topics such as what happened at school and trouble with friends when mum or dad is behind the
wheel.

More than half of parents believe their child is easier to talk to in the car because there are
no other distractions, while four in 10 believe it’s because they’re not under a judgemental
stare at the time.

A third of parents also admit THEY find it easier to talk about more delicate subjects with their
little ones – such as the birds and the bees – while driving.

One in 10 concerned mums and dads have even deliberately gone on a car journey in a desperate bid
to get their child to talk more.

The study of 2,000 parents was conducted by Renault and explores the importance of family time in
the car as a place of honest conversations and storytelling.

Dr Linda Papadopolous, leading family psychologist commenting on behalf of Renault Scénic, said:
“This research suggests that the car journey can be a really important time for families, as for
some it can be the only time where a conversation can take place with very little distraction.”

“Based on the findings of the study it appears that parents feel that their children are more
comfortable addressing deeper and more meaningful issues if they’re not under the spotlight – if
mum or dad are focused on the road they can’t be under their watchful gaze, and sometimes this
can make it easier to open up.”

“And given the fact most parents are driving their children around in excess of eight times a
week, this means families have plenty of time to talk.”

The study reveals a list of the top 10 ‘car confessions’ from children – which includes 22 per
cent getting into trouble with a teacher and the same percentage revealing they hadn’t done very
well in a test.

Fourteen per cent of children have told their parents they forgot to do some homework when in the
car, and one in 10 admitted to getting detention for something they did wrong.

A further 10 per cent opened up about being worried about a change in their body, while eight per
cent have asked about the birds and the bees.

Sadly 12 per cent of children have talked to their parents about being bullied while in the
car,13 per cent confessed they thought no-one liked them and a third have discussed friendship
issues.

More than a third of parents think their conversations with the children are far more honest in
the car than anywhere else.

And six in 10 parents say it sometimes helps not having to look their child in the eye when
discussing more sensitive issues.

A quarter of parents admit they are less likely to react if their child confesses to being in
trouble when in the car, and one in five say they think their youngster is more receptive to
having a serious conversation because they can’t immediately be sent to their room.

A third of those polled say their children can hide a little in the car, which makes embarrassing
or sensitive discussions easier to handle.

Just over a third of mums and dads say they listen more when in the car with the children, as
there are no other distractions such as cooking and pressure to leave the house on time.

As such, 31 per cent feel more clued up on their children’s favourite TV and music shows after a
journey and 22 per cent know more about their friends.

More than a quarter of kids are happier divulging information about how they are feeling about
school when in the car, while 22 per cent are more likely to open up about family issues.

Bullying, what happened with a girlfriend or boyfriend and puberty are all subjects which are
more commonly brought up in the car than in any other location.

While some parents find it easier to talk to their children about homework, and addressing
questions about the world in general.

Top 10 ‘car confessions’

1. Something happening in a friendship at school

2. They didn’t do very well in a test

3. They had been naughty at school / got into trouble with a teacher

4. They forgot to do some homework

5. They accidentally hurt someone in the playground

6. They thought no-one liked them

7. They were being bullied

8. They were worried about a change in their body

9. They wanted to know more about the birds and the bees

10. They got a detention for something

Top 10 ‘easier in the car’ conversations

1. What happened at school that day

2. Trouble with friends

3. Whether they are enjoying school

4. Family issues

5. Homework

6. Questions about the world in general

7. Getting into trouble at school

8. What happened with a girlfriend / boyfriend

9. Growing pains / puberty

10. Bullying

Drivers urged to put safety first

New car buyers are more likely to upgrade infotainment systems than choose enhanced safety features, according to new research.

Four in five motorists say that safety technologies are important when buying a car, but a fifth refuse to pay extra for them even if it reduces the chance of having an accident on the road.

Buying a new HyundaiThe Stop the Crash Partnership, made up of crash test assessors Global NCAP, Thatcham Research, Bosch UK, Continental Tyres UK and ZF TRW, is proposing a three-point plan to address the low-take up of additional safety technologies.

1. AEB as standard: 83% of drivers agreed that the best safety features should be fitted as standard. Stop the Crash supports this view and is calling on car manufacturers to fit AEB (Autonomous Emergency Braking) as standard on all new makes and models. At present only one of the 10 best selling cars in the UK has standard fit AEB.

2. Safety stocked: vehicle manufacturers should review how readily available cars with safety tech such as AEB and Lane Keep Assist systems are to dealers – for test-drives, demonstrations and sales.

3. Dealer safety training: 76% of consumers said they would expect a demonstration of the safety technologies on board when buying from a franchised dealership. Stop the Crash is calling on vehicle manufacturers to invest more on training so that dealers can explain safety technologies to consumers and successfully “sell safety”.

The view of the Stop the Crash Partnership is that if motorists can apply pressure by demonstrating that safety is a ‘deal-breaker’ it will encourage more manufacturers to fit safety technology as standard, as well as understanding the importance of premium tyres with adequate levels of tread depth, the number of accidents worldwide would reduce.

For example, it has been found that AEB can lead to a 38% reduction in real-world rear-end crashes and has the potential to save 1,100 lives and more than 120,000 casualties over the next 10 years.

Nissan creates mobile phone temptation-free zone

Nissan has utilised Victorian technology in a bid to stop drivers from being distracted by their mobile phones at the wheel.

Despite tough new police crackdowns, one in five admits illegally texting while driving.

Now boffins have created a prototype compartment within the armrest of a Nissan Juke lined with a Faraday cage – an invention dating back to the 1830s.

Once a mobile device is placed in the compartment and the lid closed, the Nissan Signal Shield creates a ‘silent zone’, blocking all the phone’s incoming and outgoing cellular, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connections.

Nissan Signal ShieldThe concept is designed to give drivers a choice about whether to eliminate the distractions caused by the millions of text messages, social media notifications and app alerts that are ‘pushed’ to smartphones each day.

Alex Smith, Managing Director, Nissan Motor GB Ltd, said: “Nissan produces some of the safest cars on the road today but we are always looking at new ways to improve the wellbeing of our customers.

“Mobile phone use at the wheel is a growing concern across the automotive industry, and indeed society, particularly with the high number of ‘pushed’ communications, such as texts, social media notifications and app alerts that tempt drivers to reach for their devices.

“The Nissan Signal Shield concept presents one possible solution for giving drivers the choice to remove all smartphone distractions while driving. This is about delivering more control at the wheel, not less.

“Some drivers are immune to the activity of their smartphone, but for those who struggle to ignore the beeps and pings, this concept provides a simple solution in this very ‘connected’ world we live in.”

All Nissan crossovers are available with Bluetooth connectivity to allow drivers to make and receive hands-free phone calls when it is safe to do so.

Nissan Signal ShieldNissanConnect, or Apple CarPlay on the all-new Nissan Micra, enable further integration with a phone’s apps.

The Nissan Signal Shield concept provides optional connectivity, giving drivers the choice between being able to contact and be contacted from the road, or creating a ‘phone-free’ space and time.

It means a digital detox and a drive that’s free of incoming distractions.

If drivers want to listen to music or podcasts stored on their smartphone, they can still connect to the car’s entertainment system via the USB or auxiliary ports.

The device will maintain wired connectivity even when in the Nissan Signal Shield compartment.

To restore the phone’s wireless connections, drivers just need to open the armrest to reveal the compartment – which can be done without taking eyes off the road or touching the phone itself – and the phone can reconnect with the mobile network and the car’s Bluetooth system.

The innovation works on the principle of the Faraday cage, an enclosure made of a conductive material, such as wire mesh, which blocks electromagnetic fields. It is named after the pioneering English scientist Michael Faraday, who invented it in the 1830s.

When an electronic device, like a smartphone, is placed inside, any incoming electromagnetic signals – such as cellular or Bluetooth data – are distributed across the cage’s external conducting material and so prevented from reaching the device.

RAC road safety spokesman Pete Williams said: “Our research shows that handheld phone use by drivers has reached epidemic proportions.

“As mobile phone technology has advanced significantly many people have become addicted to them.

“However, the use of a handheld phone when driving represents both a physical and mental distraction and it has been illegal since 2003.

“The Nissan Signal Shield is a good example of a technology that can help drivers be phone smart. For those who can’t avoid the temptation, this simple but pretty clever tech gives them a valuable mobile-free zone.

“We are asking all drivers to make a personal commitment not to use a handheld phone at the wheel by visiting www.bephonesmart.uk and sharing their promise with their friends and family.”

Kia Picanto review

Perhaps nothing more demonstrates the dramatic progress made by South Korea’s Kia brand than the following statistic…. in the whole of 2007, Kia sold 29,429 cars in the UK. Now, 10 years on, 29,707 were sold in the first three months of 2017 alone.

After the soaring success of 2016’s new Sportage crossover, Kia hopes the next-generation Picanto city car will add to the upwards sales momentum.

The same size as the outgoing Picanto, the new car is more stylish, spacious, practical and refined.

Kia Picanto reviewSome 160,000 Picantos have found homes in the UK since the model was launched in 2004 and around two in three buyers are women, so crucially, the 2017 third-generation Picanto is a looker.

Now only available as a five-door for easier access to the rear, the front end of the new car features Kia’s signature ‘tiger nose’ grille with air intakes and fog lights below, giving it plenty of attitude and a sportier feel. And with sculpted sides and a pert rear, it makes the Picanto one of the best looking cars in its class.

Kerb appeal is no mean feat in the A segment, where its rivals include two sets of good-looking triplets (the VW Up!/Skoda Citigo/SEAT Mii and Toyota Aygo/Citroen C1/Peugeot 108), the funky Renault Twingo and Fiat 500, plus its cousin – the Hyundai i10.

Kia Picanto reviewInside there’s plenty of space, thanks to a slightly longer wheelbase. It’s comfy and well designed up front with good visibility. The only disappointment is that the driver’s seat has no height adjustment and the steering wheel won’t adjust for reach.

There’s a mix of soft and hard touch dark plastics, but it generally has a quality feel and there’s good built quality.

It’s a little more cosy in the back, but it’s possible for four average sized adults to travel in comfort, which is more than you can say for some rivals. There’s also a class-leading 255 litres of luggage capacity in the boot.

Kia Picanto reviewPriced from £9,450 – £13,950, the new Picanto is available in five trim levels (ranging from ‘1’ up to ‘GT-Line S’ (pictured), but it’s worth studying the spec sheets for the sweet spot (probably ‘3’).

For instance, only the GT-Line S and grade ‘3’ versions come with the generous 7-inch centre-mounted ‘floating’ touchscreen, which gives access to the navigation, infotainment and connectivity systems.

And if safety is your priority, all models from grade ‘3’ have Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) which can bring the car to a complete stop at certain speeds and to a partial stop at up to 107mph (AEB is available as a £350 option on grades ‘1’ and ‘2’).

Kia Picanto reviewThat said, even the entry-level grade ‘1’ model features tinted windows, a DAB radio with AUX and USB ports, automatic headlights, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Hill-start Assist Control (HAC) and six airbags.

Other goodies available include heated front seats and steering wheel, a wireless phone charger, electric sunroof, plus a rear parking camera with parking sensors.

Naturally, there are also various customisation options for the interior and exterior.

Kia Picanto reviewAvailable at launch with two eager petrol engines – a 66bhp1.0-litre three-cylinder or an 83bhp 1.2-litre four-cylinder – both mated to a five-speed manual gearbox (the 1.2 will also be available as an automatic).

The engines are smooth and economical – 64.2mpg/101 g/km of CO2 and 61.4mpg/106g/km respectively.

Clearly the bigger engine has a bit more punch, but for town driving the 1.0-litre is more than ample. For longer journeys, especially ones that involve steep hills, the 1.2 might be the one to go for. Both are surprisingly refined and cruise nicely at motorway speeds.

Kia Picanto review

Neither engine will make your Picanto a hot hatch in performance terms, but then that’s not why people buy city cars. For the record, the 1.0-litre is good for a 0-60mph time of 13.8 seconds and a top speed of 101mph, while the 1.2 can reach 60mph in 11.6 seconds and go on to 106mph.

Later in 2017, arguably the pick of the engine choices will become available. The 99bhp 1.0-litre T-GDi turbocharged petrol three-cylinder unit is sure to put a smile on the face of more spirited drivers.

Cabin refinement is one thing, but how does the new Picanto drive? Well, more good news here because it’s one of the best handling cars in its class, though not quite as good as the VW/Skoda/SEAT trio.

Kia Picanto reviewAs you’d expect from a city car, it’s light and easy to manoeuvre, but it also feels planted on the road, while body roll in well contained when cornering.

The ride is a tad bouncy on rougher roads, but overall, it drives well. And if you want a little extra agility, the sporty GT-Line version might be worth considering.

Verdict: The new Kia Picanto is a competitively-priced, sassy, well-equipped, refined and nippy city car, backed up by an unbeatable seven-year warranty. What’s not to like?
